Hi ... CLA (Safflower Seeds) for help with digestion?

Hi,

My daughter had her gallbladder removed last year and ever since has a rough time digesting fatty foods .. she's better off w/o her gallbladder for certan but her body still has not adjusted fully to its loss. She's 18yrs old .. it was severely dysfunctional from birth and had anomolies from birth ater biopsy -- !

Anyway ----  she is tring CLA to help with digestion and says it's helping.

Any insight or thougths on this product?

Thanks so much,
C~

I just wanted it clarified so somebody doesn't start chugging HCL.  The part for digestion is Betaine HCL, not plain HCL.  Plain HCL is hard to deal with.

yes mine has hydrochloric acid in it......along with lots of different enzymes. So far I am doing better with more rather than less HCL as some people.

C- I am one of the lucky ones.....i don't get loose stools from eating fatty foods. But I don't really eat a whole lot of fatty foods anyway! :)

HCL is hydrochloric acid, a necessary part of digestion.  CLA is Conjugated Linoleic Acid, a fatty acid, which is a fancy way of saying a type of fat that happens to be beneficial to most people, assuming the body can break it down.

My daughter had zero stones, too.  Severe dysfunction.  She has issues with the acid foods too .. and IBS like symtpoms about 20mins after eating anything fried but she said so far the CLA has stopped that from happeing .... hmmmmmmmmmmm

Yes, wonder what the H in HCL is vs. CLA .. this is ALL new to me.

Thanks guys!

I have been taking a digestive enzyme blend with HCL with my meals, ever since my gallbladder removal 3 months ago. It works great. If i forget to take it for a couple of days, ohhhhh boy.....my belly even burns then.
I cannot eat tomato sauce anymore though without it really bothering me......but heh....no more gallbladder problems! My problem wasn't stones though like most people.  :)

Thanks so much and I was wondering the same thing .. if it's a fat isn't that the opposite of what she's trying to accomplish -- better digestion ---

She's ok in the wt dept. and not trying to lose any.  She lost 55 lbs after her GB symtpoms started in Aug '07 to Jan '08 when it was removed .. 30 in a month!  And that's when they finally took it seriously that something was going on!  But, the 55 lost was overweight lbs from a sluggish motiilty from birth .. her GB Tubes were 2X the normal length and only 1/3rd the thickness in diameter so the bile was a timebomb waiting to literally explode.  So her weight for height is 100% ok.

She'll find out soon enough if the CLA helps or hinders I'm sure LOL ..... but you are right, now that you mention the other med that is for the GB digestive problems that happen sometimes after and she does have a good Pedi GI.

Keep in mind that CLA is a fat, so if she's having trouble digesting fat, CLA might not be the best thing.  I really don't know that it helps a whole lot, some people like it but my customers at the health food stores I managed never lost any weight on it.  Not a huge sample, though.  But since it's a fat, you might want to talk to someone about it, such as a naturopath.  Also consider artichoke, the herb, it helps the liver digest fat.  Ayurvedic medicine also has some herbs that help with fat absorption, so you might look into seeing an ayurvedic physician.  Good luck.

Sorry!  I knew I had read something about your daughter!!!!  I posted this about your son on the other thread thinking....oh, well, who cares!  After I posted it, I realized that THIS was the post I was looking for!  OOPS.  Replace the references to your son for your daughter!  MY BAD!!!!

Maybe you should talk to your son's doctor about taking Cholestyramine powder.  It's by prescription, and to take Benifiber.  The Cholestyramine absorbs the fat.  It was originally for cholesterol.

I knew someone who took two products and she does well.  You have to play with the Cholestyramine powder till you get the right dose so you don't get constipated.  That's why you take the fiber. The Cholestyramine you might not have to take every day when you get the dose down to the amount that is good for you.  The lady I knew who took it has done so for years, and she had 18" of her intestine removed as well as her gallbladder.

I'm glad he's back to normal.  I hope he stays that way!
