The herb that's 42 times better for you than an apple

The herb that's 42 times better for you than an apple

The American Chemical Society (ACS), one of the pre-eminent scientific organizations in the world-and one with a degree of integrity far above any medical group I know of-has come out with a report to warm the heart of any barefoot doctor.

Herbs have higher antioxidant activity than fruits, vegetables, and some spices, including garlic, report scientists in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the journal of the ACS.

Oregano came out way ahead of all other herbs in antioxidant power-from three to 40 times as much. In comparison to the antioxidant activities of a few select fruits and vegetables, the potency of oregano was well ahead. Oregano has 42 times more antioxidant activity than apples, 30 times more than potatoes, 12 times more than oranges, and four times more than blueberries. One tablespoon of fresh oregano, for example, contains the same antioxidant activity as one medium-sized apple. The other herbs with an antioxidant punch, in order of potency, are dill, garden thyme, rosemary, and peppermint.

Shiow Y. Wang, Ph.D., of the USDA's Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, studied and compared the antioxidant activity of 39 commonly used herbs. "People should use more herbs for flavoring instead of salt and artificial chemicals," he said.
Treat them like any other vegetable-to derive the nutrition from them.

Turmeric and Curcumin Supplements

Two turmeric/curcumin supplements contained far fewer curcuminoids than listed on their labels.
Advance Physician Formulas Curcumin (“Doctor Formulated”) -- Contained only 18.9 mg of curcuminoids per capsule, less than 10% of the amount expected from its label.
Paradise Herbs & Essentials Turmeric -- Contained only 14.7% of the expected curcuminoids, yielding only 18.4 mg per capsule.

The best value Swanson Superior Herbs Curcumin Complex and Jarrow Formulas Curcumin 95 were each approved products providing 500 mg of curcuminoids at the lowest cost (13 cents). If you are interested in enhanced bioavailability, the Swanson product included Bioperine, which can reportedly more than double the bioavailability. At 17 cents per 500 mg of curcuminoids, Life Extension Super Curcumin with Bioperine was also a good value. Products that include BCM-95 may have even greater bioavailability (about seven times that of normal curcumin). Consequently, although more expensive, Naturally Enhanced Absorption Curcu-Gel (52 cents per 500 mg) and Naturally Enhanced Absorption Curcu-Gel Ultra (39 cents per 500 mg) may be good values, as they may provide equivalent amounts of curcuminoids in the blood as other products but using much lower doses.

Very interesting! Is oregano not related to the catnip family herb? I sometimes feel a bit strange after eating large quantities of it so have always associated it as a slightly halucinogenic herb. It is interesting the report used 'fresh' as wonder what potency is lost with dried?

In India’s system of Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric for thousands of years has been recognized as a key balancing and detoxifying herb. In Indonesia’s traditional medical system known as Jamu, turmeric is considered the “Queen” of all herbs, and is the featured daily herb for tens of millions of Indonesians. In Japan and China, people embrace turmeric for its powerful detoxification, and there are societies in Japan where turmeric juice is consumed daily. In the western medical and herbal traditions, turmeric is considered by many leading scholars to be the most important healing herb on earth.
I've never tried it as a tea! will try it I take 800mg per day.

and lets not forget turmeric...good for so many things. I make a tea out of it. YOu can do this with so many herbs, just make a tea, add cinnamon, honey, ginger whatever you like.

Turmeric is a good tonic for all organs. Don't know about you all, but my organs sure need a good tonic.
