Tooth Pain After Filling

2 days ago, I had severe tooth pain that came out of nowhere. It was my upper left side, 2nd molar from the back. The pain was incredible in the roof of my mouth, and was actually hard to pinpoint which tooth was the culprit. Hot food or drink hurt incredibly bad, while cold liquid made the pain go away almost instantly. My dentist saw a cavity on the tooth that was "deep", and he was concerned that he would have to do a root canal right then and there.

After he drilled out the cavity, he said that "he now thought the nerve would eventually be alright", and he filled the cavity "just like any other cavity", but he said it was "much deeper". He told me that the outcome would be one of two ways: Either the pain would go away, and everything would be alright, or the pain would remain/increase and I would have to have a root canal.

After the Novocaine wore off I of course had pain. But that night I had no pain when sleeping and slept great. When I woke up the pain was almost gone when doing nothing, but now cold liquid KILLED my tooth, and warm liquid was ok. Also, the tooth itself was SUPER sensitive, and I could barely even touch it with my tongue. As long as I sat doing nothing, the pain was alright. That was yesterday, one day after the filling.

Today, I slept well again for the 2nd straight night, and my tooth sensitivity is down dramatically when compared to yesterday, but I still can't bite down on it yet. Also, now both hot and cold hurt my tooth, as well as the roof of my mouth. As long as I'm doing nothing, I'm just fine. If I bend over to tie my shoes, it feels like my tooth is going to shoot out of my mouth.

That brings us to my question. How long should I wait for the pain to go away, to see if this procedure worked? Hours? Days? Weeks? Months?

One week later and my tooth pain is all gone. It got better everyday, so well in fact, that I just had the tooth directly below the tooth in question filled an hour ago. I have to have 3 wisdom teeth extracted and then I'm all good. I hope that goes good...................

Going back to your dentist or seeing an endodontist to have a pulp vitality test is advised.
