AVG in my experience slows the computer down by using up resources. At least the free version did...

AVAST has been the best so far for me for the last 8 years. I've used it along with a few malware programs to fix bugs in other's computers and get them back up and running. The best thing is they have a FREE home user version and if you purchase the Pro version, it's cheaper than any other one out there.
The advantage I've found to using AVAST is that they are based in Europe and so are hours ahead of us when it comes to updating for new viruses. A good thing for us here in the states that's for sure. Also, they don't have a time table for updating. If they create a fix for something that comes out, you get it as soon as it's out and you are protected. Unlike some Anti-virus companies that only put out fixes per a fixed schedule.
Also, by using a browser to access the internet that does not run off of your operating system, will add an extra firewalled type protection to your internet browsing.
See Firefox browser or Google Chrome. Neither of these use your Windows Operating System to run like Internet Explorer does... fyi....
Also, keep in mind what Dazon said about having more than one anti-virus running at a time. Both Norton and McAfee have remnants that remain behind even after you supposedly un-install them that need to be deleted. If you have had these programs prior to your current Anti-virus program, you will need someone to lead you through how to get rid of these registry values so that they do not continue to disrupt your current anti-virus programing.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHANGE REGISTRY VALUES ON YOUR OWN.

If you do, then your computer will crash, if not now, eventually. Take it from someone who played and had to pay the price with a clean install and hours, days, months of problematic issues with programs that kept messing up and wasting precious computer time.

If you must mess with your registry, find this program ERUNT and install it. Micr$oft's recovery DOES NOT back up your full registry like this program does. If you do indeed mess something up, this program will allow you to restore everything as it was prior to you deleteing something you shouldn't have. It creates a FULL registry back up every time you shutdown and startup your computer. This program also comes in handy when installing and un-installing programs. You can also create a back-up on demand when needed and is the best program for doing a full back up that I've seen. Oh and it's FREE!

Everyone will have thier opinion as to what works for them and what doesn't. It all depends on how you use your computer and what rules you follow as to how you download and run things from the internet. If you'd like a copy of the rules that will keep you safe, send me a note and I'll pass it along to you. My brother is a Micro$oft Network Administrator and my other brother is a Linux Guru, so I've got great resources. Not to mention my attention to detail and desire for learning as I go along...

Thanks Dazon for starting this thread. I look forward to sharing more of what I've learned if it can save other's from hours of headache and computer down time.
Cheers!

I was a huge fan of Bitdefender.  It had great reviews on some of the computer sites!!  I was impressed at first, then had to deal w/ customer service and got the run around.  I won't deal w/ them anymore because of it.  I use AVG now, and no problems at all, AND it doesn't slow down my system!!  =)

My husband was sold Kaspersky and was told it was "the best" as well as being the highest priced at the time.  Our computer was never slower and the screen froze up constantly.  I learned from another thread on this subject about AVG.  I downloaded it for free and haven't had a single problem.

You are very welcome.  I caught the "addiction" to computers about 9 yrs. ago.  I had my first system built and then proceeded to crash it (win98) as I installed a second virus program on it (dunce that I was, not knowing at that time that you don't install 2 virus scanners on the same computer).  Then after the place I had build it, reinstalled it, I took off......

I was into installing anything & everything...."weeeeee"...freeeeebies.  So lots of hiccups along the way & I learned how to reformat, reinstall and install hardware too.....get into the registry & tweak abit, etc.  Eventually I found a way to have 2 virus scanners on the system...lol!!!  Justification!!!!  I had to set it so one did not run at bootup and switch back/forth.

That led to windows xp  and eventually building my own systems.  Now, though I take it easy as I don't have the time...pulled many all nighters.  I helped friends, etc. with woes and pretty much solve my router woes unless a squirrel chews through or storms damage lines, etc...and of course...new router time.

I found it to be a challenge, but one that stimulated me & I think I should have signed up for classes, but now my daughter has.  She saw me go throw the stages of learning & helping others, etc.

It is exciting as it is never boring.  I like to listen to others share what they are into with computers...some are more into gaming, arts/graphic software....apple....etc.

:-)
Glad that this forum was started!!!

You are very welcome.  I like to try different things, but some are challenging with hogging resources, freezing now & then.  I tried F-Secure, Kaspersky, Avast, Comodo and ESET nod as well as CA along the way with AVG, Zone Alarm......

I did not try Lavasoft's anti-virus, but used their Adaware professional.  The same goes for Spyware Sweeper and Spyware Doctor.  They started as one thing and got into the other.

The tiresome part is either paying for the subscription update with a new # or uninstalling the program to install a new upgrade.  Sometimes I get the 2 yr. license so it doesn't roll around so quick...lol!

There are so many choices out there, but I would still choose Avanquest's System Suite.

This is a good forum & you can ask about the best of everything:  Spyware removers, ad blockers, firewalls, modems, routers.......that will keep us busy :-)))))

When I first started with computers, I went crazy downloading the freebies...quickly found out about the scumware and other hidden things.  But it was a step in the journey in learning about protection.

I have used the above mentioned but also use Avanquest's security program on quite a few of my systems which includes the anti-virus software.  I have used it since it was VCOM back 5 or so years ago.  It has protected my computers nicely. The price is reasonable.  It is on the 9th version, but will probably be coming out soon with the 10th.    I have used Iolo's software which is system mechanic 9 now, but it isn't my favorite.

I have Norton & McAfee on a few of my machines and will shortly install Norton 2010 on the computer with Windows 7 on it.

Some really good Anti-virus software programs are:

-AVG

-Norton

-McAfee

They all pretty much work the same way, so in that sense, there really isn't no real "Best" Antivirus software.Depending on what you want to protect against though, each antivirus has their strengths and weaknesses.

However, I would recommend AVG Free Edition located at http://free.avg.com/. My college has recommended it to my cohort as a very reliable antivirus to use. It offers the most of the same features that the antivirus software you have to pay for, but as the name suggests it doesn't cost anything to use. AVG will give you a warning about dangerous websites searched on Google.com before clicking on them and will also warn you if a website you are visiting is a reported phishing (fake) website. I have been using this antivirus for a little over a year now and I haven't found any problems with it.

I have also used Norton and McAfee Antivirus in the past. I have heard some bad things about both of these, but overall I believe they work pretty well. Norton has a good firewall and both McAfee and Norton offers phishing protection.

I hope this answers your question. If not, or if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask and I'll gladly respond as soon as possible. :)
