Congestive heart failure suspected cause is a virus

Wondering if anyone has info on congestive heart failure - suspected cause is a virus.  My 31 yr. old son was complaining of feeling bloated and having difficulty breathing.  Original doctor visit was to convenient care original diagnosis was seasonal allergies and prescribed an albuterol inhaler.  The air quality has been very poor this summer with high humidity so this sounded rational.  Said if he didn't feel better to follow up with his primary care physician in a couple of days if systems had not improved.  2 days later visit to primary care physician - they weighed him and I was there so I took note of the weight - prescribed again albuterol inhaler Claritin Nasacort and nexium for stomach.  He doesn't live at home anymore so I called everyday to check he said he was okay not to worry.  4 days later he called late Sunday night and asked to get him back into the doctor he was feeling worse.  Back to the primary care physician - again checking the lungs etc.  I mentioned when they weighed him he had gained 27 pounds in less than an week and wasn't eating as he normally would.  At that time they checked his abdomen which was distended and extremely bloated.  They sent him home again and said they would get him in for a cat scan of his abdomen.  Later that afternoon they called and I took him to outpatient services at the local hospital they did the test and he was admitted with congestive heart failure.  They said this was probably caused by a virus but it would already be long gone so there was no way to diagnose what or when he had it because no fever presented.  3 days later they did an angio-cardiogram (spelling?) through his femoral artery and said that his heart was functioning at 20% limit sodium intake to 2000 mg a day.  He was in the hospital for a week and then they sent him home with me with 7 bottles of meds - keep him hydrated and limit of 2000 mg. of sodium a day.  His arteries are clear and he was a slightly overweight 31 yr. old male.  Luckily we were able to get in for a second opinion at one of the best medical centers - they again kept him for observation and additional testing, - an mri of the heart and a biopsy of the the heart tissue.  My question is:  Is this normal?  Why does it take so long to diagnose?  Is it permanent?  Is there anywhere I can actually get valid information that pertains to this condition? His arteries were clear with no buildup and he was a healthy young male.  Would appreciate any help
