I've had ulcerative colitis for almost 50 years. I recently had a colonoscopy where they said I have low-grade dysplasia, along with highly active UC. They also removed a couple of polyps (not dysplasic) and left several in. She said there was also some activity in my small intestine and they couldn't differentiate where the large and small ended. They want to remove the entire colon and rectum where the dysplasia is located. I'm resisting. What are my options other than full surgery? Should I be concerned about the Small Intestine, too? If I do have the surgery, what are the chances that I'll get UC in the next section? Thank you for your help.
Well, though you could opt against a surgery, the risk of not doing a surgery is not the chance of developing / worsening or UC but development of cancer, as suggested by low grade dysplasia and a surgery is highly recommended at an early stage. Removal of a segment doesn’t mean that the condition would spread to the next segment.
Hope this is helpful.
Take care!
