We need help!!!!

My mother has had severe diarrhea for almost a year now, in Dec.2008 she weighed 179 lbs, today (November 11,2009) she weighs 97 lbs.  The GI "specialist" she is seeing can not tell us what is wrong with her. Is Crohn's Disease something that can develop over time or is it something that is apparent from birth?
I am scared for my mother she is starving to death, and is very depressed, because when she eats or drinks ANYTHING it goes right through her, she has no muscle mass left and is very tired all of the time.  I am just grasping at straws trying to find out what is wrong with her.  Any info you could provide would be appreciated.

They have done the barium, they still can't 'find anything'.  She is on a weekly B12 shot (lucky me I get to give to her).  They just put her on an antibiolic for a bactrial infection that only affects the intestines?  They said that if that doesn't work they wre going to try a 'study' treatment.?.?.  Thanks for your input though.

Has your mom had a barium follow through?  Mydaughter had similar symptons and was diagnosed with crohns.  If your mom is tired all the time she should have her B12 tested.  This vitamin is absorbed at the end of the small intestine and if this part of the bowel is ulcerated it can't absorb it.  This would explain her fatigue

yes, her stools are mucousy (is that a word?)  and she has pain in her stomache, no blood that I am aware of.  We have tried everything we can think of that is high in Fiber.  Thanks for the thoughts.

Crohn's is not apparent from birth and can be developed at any time.  The most frequent onset is between ages 20 and 50.  However, aside from the frequent diarrhea, is she having any other Crohn's-like symptoms, such as stomach pain, blood in the diarrhea, or mucous in the stool?

I know this sounds obvious and I'm sure you have already tried it, but try a really high fiber diet.  Fiber will help cause formed stools.
