Why were 40 biopsies taken during colonoscopy?

I had a colonoscopy last week, which came back clear, however on my report it shows that 40 biopsies were taken from the rectum to the terminal ileum. I was just wondering why so many biopsies were taken if everything was clear in the colonoscopy?

The biopsies are to confirm that there is no cancer.  doctors like to take a biopsy of each area that looks concerning even though the colonoscopy is clear
