new job.... should I say anything?

I am looking for a new job but my concern is that I have to get my remicade infusions every 4 weeks also I see my GI doctor every 6 weeks and I get so frustrated when I have to go and ask for couple hours off or for remicade i have to ask for the day off it takes me all day to get my infusion because the hospital takes for ever to get the med ready plus i get sick on the day of, so i don't know how to handle this situation, I prefer not to mention anything but i need time to get my treatme.

How you girls handle it?

Find out what their time off policy is. Remember, even healthy people need time off for general doctors appointments, or other meetings and things. That increases if they have kids! Employers have to be understanding. Just make it clear to them that this controls it so that you are fine. You need to show that you can do the job. Techniqually, they can't decline because of your illness, but if they are concerned that you won't be up to the job, they can always find some excuse. Remicade every 4 weeks is frequent, perhaps your doctor would be willing to switch you to Humira which you give yourself every other week. I had to do that since they didn't like me doing a heavy dose of Remicade every 3 weeks.

i would tell your employer ... they can not "not hire" you because of that... it would be discrimation ... its something that you have to do to be healthy.. maybe you can try and set up a certain day where u get the shots and always have that day off .. depending if you are going to have weekdays off or not ...

Hi there,

I have had Crohns for 10 years and am 29 yrs old now. I have found that honesty is always a good policy. Even the toughest of supervisors I have had have been understanding if i needed a few hours or extra days off. I even make it through grad school with frequent hospitalizations and a bowel resection at the end! If you need to, you can offer to put in additional time on weekends. I would encourage you to disclose. Remember, the disease is part of who we are - part of the person this company hired.

Good Luck!!

Hi Kathy - is your Crohn's the fistulising type? I just wonder, as you are on Remicade.
If not, perhaps you could ask your GI about switching you to injections of methotrexate. I do them at home, once a week (12.5 mg) and have had brilliant results. You will need regular blood tests, as mtx can be toxic to the liver, but you may be able to get these done outside of your working hours.  At least this will not entail a full day off work, and the injections don't make me feel sick. I have been doing them for about 7 yrs now. Takes all of 3 minutes.

Just a thought.

Liz.
