3 hours ago Christie calls out former WH physician, doc unmoved

(CNN) – Gov. Chris Christie Wednesday blasted as a "hack" a former White House physician following her assessment in a CNN interview the day before that his weight may cause him to die in office but the doctor is standing her ground.

On Wednesday, Christie called Dr. Connie Mariano and "vented," according to the doctor who served in the White House during the Clinton presidency. After the conversation with Christie, she spoke with CNN's National Political Correspondent Jim Acosta and stood by her statements and professed no regrets.

Christie has spoken openly about his weight and health concerns and even poked fun at himself – most recently at a Monday appearance on David Letterman's late night program, saying "I'm basically the healthiest fat guy you've ever seen in your life." He punctuated the joke by snacking on a doughnut midway through the interview because he "didn't know it was going to be this long."

But he wasn't pleased when Mariano offered her assessment in the interview without having evaluated him, describing her publicly as "just another hack who wants five minutes on TV."

"If she wants to get on a plane and come here to New Jersey and ask me if she wants to examine me and review my medical history, I will have a conversation with her about that," Christie said after touring the post-Superstorm Sandy reconstruction effort in Sea Girt, New Jersey.

"Until that time she should shut up," he fired.

Mariano told CNN after his comments, "It's unfortunate that he took it in that manner. It was meant to be constructive."

"But when I see someone who looks like him, you don't have to be a White House doctor to be concerned about health issues," she said, adding that she had invited him to her offices in Arizona.

Mariano made her initial comments in an interview with CNN Tuesday.

She acknowledged that she is a Republican and supported him running for office, but characterized herself as "a physician more than I'm a Democrat or Republican and I'm worried about this man dying in office," she said.

Christie is widely thought to be considering a presidential run and has not ruled out that prospect. Instead, he has said he is focused on his current job in the Garden State and is up for re-election this year.

But his health is "almost like a time bomb that's waiting to go off unless he addresses those issues before running for office," she said.

Christie has pointed to the long and stressful days he worked during and after the Sandy crisis as a sign he can handle the demands of public office and his physical condition.

He mocked her as a "genius" for her ability to diagnose him remotely.

"I find it fascinating that a doctor in Arizona who has never met me, never examined me, never reviewed my medical history or records, knows nothing about my family history, could make a diagnosis from 2,400 miles away," he said. He added that someone with "the privilege of having a medical license should, in my view, conduct themselves more responsibly."

Mariano replied that she did not need to perform a formal physical evaluation: "When you see it, you can't help it. It's an issue."

At a press conference on Monday Christie said that he and his doctors did have a plan for his health, and "whether it'll be successful or not, you'll all be able to notice."

"My doctor continues to warn me that my luck is going to run out relatively soon, so believe me it's something I'm very conscious of," he said.

I've tried the smaller portions and several meals/day...... never worked because I was always hungry and waiting for that next meal time to roll around.

Exercise does as much for me, as anything.  I walk 3-5 miles/day, do yoga, etc........ always worked until my thyroid quit working, and even on replacement medication, the only way I can budge a pound is to, literally, not eat and exercise non stop. Then the fluid builds up and whatever pounds were lost are right back.

One stumbling block I have is also my husband; he's right at 6' tall, weighs about 180 and can eat anything he wants without gaining an ounce, so he has a hard time understanding when I tell him I don't need to be eating at Mickey D's ever again...........lol

Could I try harder?  Of course.

Yes, Michelle is in excellent shape since she works out and eats so well, but I've seen some "less than flattering" pics of her booty.

Teko, it is more than discipline...read this article. You can do more research on it if you like.
I like sweets too and if it were not for my live being unable to process and metabolize food, I would probably be in the same boat. Eating makes me nearly comatose.
He will feel rejected and resent you for your feelings and though I really understand how you feel, if you provide his meals just make it a lot of vegetable base foods-Atkins is good.
Also, what Glass did is extremely important. Eating several small meals instead of large meals. If he gets his needs met nutritionally he may scale back on the addictive foods.

My hubby is hefty. Always has been a big man but now he has really packed it on. I cannot stand it because it effects us as a couple and as a couple it affects me. He doesnt want to do anything that involves getting off the couch anymore. He puts in his 8 hours and comes home and sits down and gets up only to hit the bathroom or the fridge. On weekends, he likes to "take a ride", geesh! How about a little fishing, hiking, camping? We fight about it all the time! I really resent that he puts his lifestyle over our relationship and that is exactly how it feels to me. I love him dearly but I know he is living on the edge of a stroke or a heart attack. He tells me that he enjoys food and no one is gonna tell him how to live. Well, in his own way he is telling me how WE are going to live, imo Fine EAT! and then get off that couch and work it off! Didnt you ever wonder why Im on the computer so much? Well, now ya know! lol

He went on the atkins diet, recommended by his heart doctor and lost mega weight. He went from a size 40 to a 34 within two months. He looked awesome, felt good, but felt deprived because he is a sugar addict. He went right back to eating the way he did pre diet and now he wears a 44.

It makes me ill literally, but the solution has got to come from within him and he likes things in the rut they are. As he ages, losing will get even harder. He jokes to people about how he is as round as he is tall. I dont think its funny, nor do I enjoy sitting around the house all the time because he lacks the physical fitness to do anything. And I do mean anything.

When I look at Christie, I cannot imagine that he has much better of a lifestyle than my husband. If he had to run to save his life, would he not keel over? I think he probably would.

And as far as Michelle and her butt. Well, african american women are known for their booty and lets not forget there are alot of non african women getting booty implants to get a bigger butt, and its popular right now.

But Michelle is active and sponsers health plans and partakes of healthy eating courses as well and feel it is not fair to even compare the two.

I also think Christi is a good looking man, even with all the poundage, and just imagine if he lost a little weight how even more handsome he would be. I think he would be much happier too, but like with my own man, it has to be a committment and come from within. It aint easy.  It kind of shows how much discipline he doesnt have imo. And that is not aimed at christi, but with a good population of hefty people like my mole.

I'm still over weight, but my doctor told me about "fit and fat".  A few years back I lost 60 lbs.  I am still working on it, maybe not as hard as I can.  I'd love to lose 40 more but I think I am dreaming on that one.

Back to fit and fat.  My doctor is in great shape.  5'8" tall, probably about 155-160lbs....  My BP is as good as his, I can do more crunches than he can, more push ups than he can, walk/run more than he was doing....  (I just like beer and won't completely give it up.... sorry, ain't going to happen.)  So when he got me started on this mission to losing weight, he told me that there are too many factors doctors use to measure "fitness" that are unrealistic.  For instance, I am 5'10" tall... my dad was 6'5" inches tall.  My arms are longer than my dads, my shoulders are wider than my dads, my hands are bigger than my dads, my feet are bigger than my dads, my head is bigger than my dads....  My waist is the same as my dads.  However, I am more fit than my dad by using exercise abilities as a measuring tool.

What my doctor prefers to use as measurements of fitness is my vital statistics and my blood work.  They show whats going on, and there is no smoke and mirrors with that.

I will never forget as a kid, looking at her underwear hanging on the clothes line (close to the Outhouse) and trying to imagine an @ss that big.

Yes Barb, mine too without a doubt is Genetics. My Father and his Brother was about 6’ and 300lbs. Their sister was about 5’ tall and about 5’ around. I will never forget as a kid, looking at her underwear hanging on the clothes line (close to the Outhouse) and trying to imagine an @ss that big. I have to be very careful how I eat. Yes, I lost 28lbs and have kept it off for a couple years now but it doesn’t take much for the weight to start pouring back on and that’s hard to do when you live in an area that has a World Wide Reputation for it’s food. I watch some people eat 2 or 3 times more than me and not gain a pound. If you haven’t already, scroll up and read how I lost weight. It works for me and may work for you, no “fancy, unrealistic” diet and no working out. Like I said in my post “I’m still a little over weight but fine with that. I have no desire to be skinny.” Actually, I would rather be a little over weight than being skinny.

Don't be so quick to judge people who are overweight.  There are those of us that have medical issues that make weight loss very difficult, if not impossible, without literally, going on a starvation diet and spending every waking minute exercising.

I agree!..Me too!

I lost 28 Lbs a couple of years ago (still have all the Jeans boxed up and stored away just incase). I didn’t go on any kind of radical diet or even join a health club. I read an article by Yahoo about why France does not have as many over weight people as The U.S. Keep in mind; I have never been to France and don’t know the authenticity of the article. I just know it made since and I lost weight and have kept it off.
They attributed it to the way they eat. In the U.S., we are accustomed to eating 3 Meals a day. In France they eat several meals a day but in smaller portions. When we eat bigger meals, our bodies take what it can metabolize and the rest turns to fat. By snacking all day (not junk food). I guess I am giving my body the fuel it needs but not in access. I found I was never hungry. I’m still a little over weight but fine with that. I have no desire to be skinny.

Here's a thought... if you're overweight, LOSE SOME WEIGHT.

In order to do so, follow these steps:

1) portion control
2) moderate & regular exercise

Not too difficult...

...and if you can't tell a JOKE when you see/read one, you're a lost cause, dude.

I will say, in all seriousness, that I find morbidly obese people offensive. And of course, it's always "genetics" that are blamed. Not EVERY single morbidly obese person out there has bad gene's. A lot of them are either depressed, have no self-control, poor self-esteem, or just plain lazy.

I didn't say ALL of them, I said "a lot of them".

Now, is Chris Christie morbidly obese? No, he's not. Is his weight offensive? Yes, it is (to me).

Look back 100 years, at how many "fat people" there were. Not a whole lot. Hell, look back 50 years. This whole "fat epidemic" is a product of our "one stop shop", "instant gratification", "fast food" society that we've created.

Why cook, when you can go to McDonald's? Why exercise, when you can take a pill to 'eat the fat away'? Why go outside and play from dawn until dusk, when you can sit in front of the TV and play video games? Why play a board game and exercise your child's mind, when you can plop them in front of the television and let IT babysit?

When you read this nonsense what can you say except - oh boy.

"While we're on the topic of weight... how about Michelle Obama's GIGANTIC bottom. That woman and Chris Christie should probably compare notes and go on the same diet. You never know, the fat from her bottom might clog an artery or something, and she might prematurely pass on, while sitting as 1st-Lady."

My point was, that CNN didn't have to report this story.

If it'd been President Obama, or a semi-viable 2016 candidate from the Left, or anyone the Left considered important politically, it wouldn't have made the front-page, or even the 2nd, 3rd or 4th page. The story would have been buried and wouldn't have seen the light of day.

Case & point: The blurb we received regarding Hillary Clinton's health issues, and how much it was downplayed, post hospital release. Mainstream media reported it, yes, but it was downplayed to the N-th degree. Because if it'd been played UP, it might have effected her chances in 2016 (should she choose to throw her hat into the ring).

That's ALL I was trying to say. Apologies if that went over everyone's head (save R Glass & Barb).

I have to agree that this looks like someone trying to get their '15 minutes of fame'. It is a legitimate concern, though, given that one of the factors that probably contributed to McCain's loss in '08 was the fear that a wannabe beauty queen who thinks shooting wolves out of a helicopter has something to do with the 2nd Ammendment and that she can see Russia from her backyard was going to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. If we'd known that McCain is in better health than could be expected from a former POW his age, the election might have turned out much differently.

He was just on letterman making fun of himself and eating a donut and getting a huge laugh. He himself makes his weight an issue, but is sensitive to someone else doing it. Altho I dont think this doctor should be doing what she did either. Two wrongs? I think so.
