180 days to 2 years for negligently causing a death! Nope not enuff.

I know it was not intentional but it does not change the fact the child died. And even if you didnt have a car seat, a seat belt or at least an attempt to restrain the child would have been called for imo. Or locking the doors even? Sad

oh i hate people that ride with a carseat up in the front seat i have even seen young girls with 2 seater cars and have their kids up there with them! its not just stupid its dangerous and they dont realize that! I keep telling my husband over and over again we are buying a 4 door granted our chances of having a child are slim but if it does happen my 2 door car aint gonna work! And good for you for telling that girl that she needed to know!

Oh how horrible...

I saw a young woman (she was probably 17?) driving around in a jeep with her baby in the front seat in a rear-facing carrier. me being the meddling mom that I am (yes I realize that I have many "meddling mom" stories...maybe that should be my new screen name?), got her attention at the stoplight and said "did you make sure to turn off your airbag?" she goes "no, why?" and i said "If an airbag goes off and strikes a rear-facing seat it can be fatal" she went white as a sheet, pulled her keys out and turned it off right then and there, and quite literally in tears thanked me profusely until the light turned green and we had to drive on.

I just wonder...what might've happened? It's horrible how people either don't know or don't respect safety rules and innocent lives pay for it.

We had a story kind of like this happen quite a few years back.  The story goes, the entife family was in the front yard doing chores, washing the truck, etc when the father gets called into work.  He runs in, puts his uniform together, grabs a lunch and goes out to the truck.  Fires the truck up, throws it into reverse and his youngest somehow snuck behind the vehicle and was run over.  Truly tragic and a freak accident in this case.

Stories like these always make me more aware of what I am doing with and around my kids.  Fortunately they are now 14 and 16 and both are big enough that sneaking any where isnt really an option...

This is so tragic! I cannot imagine! Technology has come a long way such as child locks on car doors. I have had the situation where my small grandchildren would open the door or try to. Thank god for car locks and windows. And I agree that the seats are hard to install sometimes but the local fire department here helps install them. But when mine were small I got a ticket one time because I didnt have car seats for 3 of mine, not because I couldnt afford it but because I did not have a car big enuff to put them in and still put the other three kids in. The judge let me off with a warning when I asked for help getting a van so I could apply the car seats and still carry the rest of us. What a tragic reminder for the parents this is.

Yup i agree! And thats good for you saying something to your friend! Im way to scared to say something to my SIL! I dont hang out with them but recently I just happened to agree to go somewhere with her and she didnt buckle her girls up! They are 3 and 5 but still our law says till age 8! so if it were me I would have! she has the car seat and booster seat she just didnt do the buckles but thats just as bad to me!

So tragic.  I think it is always a good reminder.  I know there are times when it would be so easy to say "oh, just this once . . . it is only a short drive . . . what could happen?"-----  but we should never be tempted like that.

I have a friend that wasn't doing her kid's car seats up because they would carry on and scream and cry.  I finally had to tell her that I thought this was crazy.  That she'd never forgive herself if something happened.  It was awkward and she didn't take it well.  ???  And this is an educated woman with a masters degree and a father that is one of the highest law enforcement officials in our city.

Anyway, a really good reminder and parents that don't buckle "em up are taking a grave risk with their most precious cargo.  Sad.
