RELEASE: The Anti-Science Climate Denier Caucus: 114th Congress Edition

CAP Action releases updated analysis showing 170 Republican climate change deniers in Congress.

Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress Action Fund released its analysis on the anti-science climate denier caucus today, showing that more than 56 percent of Republicans in the 114th Congress deny or question the science behind human-caused climate change. Even though more than 97 percent of climate scientists agree that climate change is occurring and that it is driven by human activity, 53 percent of House Republicans and 72 percent of Senate Republicans deny the occurrence of human-caused climate change.

Just yesterday, Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) joined the crowd when, according to E&E Daily, he dismissed the reality that greenhouse gases are linked to climate change, citing the history of Greenland. Sen. Kirk’s statement comes on the heels of what will likely end up being the hottest year on record.

“The new Congress brings little improvement in the number of Republicans who openly rejected the scientific reality of climate change,” said Noreen Nielsen, Vice President of Communications and Advocacy at the Center for American Progress Action Fund. “The ‘not a scientist’ crowd of 2014 candidates leads the crowd of newcomers, but long-time deniers such as Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) are still around and ignoring the bulk of scientific research. Their position has prevented Congress from taking meaningful action on climate change for years, putting our health and economy at risk.”

The 39 climate deniers in the Senate have taken more than $28 million in donations from the coal, oil, and gas industries, while the 131 House climate deniers have taken more than $35 million. In contrast, all other members of Congress combined have taken less from the coal, oil, and gas industries than just the House climate deniers.

With so many climate deniers in Congress, it should be no surprise that the committees working on issues related to climate change are full of them, and their priorities for the 114th Congress appear to undermine action at every turn. Thirteen out of 21 Republican members of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology—or 62 percent—reject the science behind human-caused global warming, joined by 67 percent—or 21 out of 31 Republican members—of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. In addition to Sen. Inhofe, 10 out of 11—or 91 percent—of Republicans on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee have said that climate change is not happening or that humans do not cause it.

“It is pretty clear that hundreds of Republican climate deniers in Congress are focused on the bottom lines of some of their biggest contributors and not the health of Americans and their families,” Nielsen said. “The impacts of climate change are hurting communities, cost Americans billions of dollars every year, and are only getting worse. It is time to stop ignoring science and putting our communities at risk.”

Although I can agree with you El, in that I think what is, simply is. The climate has changed and is changing and whether that is predominately due to man made causes or what I believe, a combination of man's actions and the natural world's changing, that is not the point.

The point is that a huge number of people governing us claim to see no connection and these are the people likely to not give a hoot about how much destruction their decisions cause to the environment, even if it means the annihilation of US as a species.

I heard a comedian complaining about how cold it is. He stands in his yard spaying Hairspray in the air saying, F#@%^& the Grand Kids, I’m Cold Now!

I honestly don't see what all the hoopla is about.

Who really cares if there's a warming "cycle" or if there's "global warming" of the man-made variety.

So what if the sea-level rises and a few species of plant & animal's go extinct.

SO WHAT?!?

Man will prevail, and the Earth will go on ticking.

And if man doesn't prevail, and we all drown in a big water-world scenario, the Earth will repair itself, and a new dominant species will rise up to rule the planet.

So please... someone tell me why it matters so much, all this global-warming/temperature-cycle bull-carp?

In the grand scheme of things... WHY DOES IT MATTER???

The contiguous United States set its temperature record in 2012. 2014 was only the 34th warmest year on record for the lower 48 states.

I know the core samples gives a lot of evidence to the past but not sure how millions of years...maybe fossils of vegitation?

I also agree that man is not doing the earth any favor and might be causing more harm, but the majority of the "issue" is natural cycle. I was born in 1976 but lets say from 1986 on I remember the weather pretty good, summer and winter and I see nothing different now then years ago.

I remember back in 2003 we had a very very cold winter but also in May we had a very hot period as I got sun burn playing golf before a lacrosse game I had. I remember because I yelled basically every time I moved during the game because it hurt so much.

" EARTH HAS NATURAL CYCLES OF WARMING AND COOLING."
You might as well give up. I have been saying the same thing and posting links but it just falls all deaf ears. We all agree that we are not doing Earth any favors but with all the evidence available, to rule out Natural Cycles is in my book, is just being Close Minded. I read one the other day that stated, we are actually in an Ice Age now and have been for millions of years. According to the study, there have been times when the Earth had no Ice and of course there is the Ice Ages long before man. I’ll look for the link later. I didn’t post it because to be honest, I have no Idea how they could go back so many Millions of years ago. I scanned over it so maybe they explained but I missed it.

You are the one with the closed mind. I have looked at many sites and the one fact that all of them seem to come back to is EARTH HAS NATURAL CYCLES OF WARMING AND COOLING. Beyond that we just don't know because the "experts" have been wrong on what the Earth would look like in 2015. They have been wrong on the intensity of Hurricanes..etc.

I do, and I think we're at an impasse. I believe you aren't looking at the real numbers just the made up ones by your propaganda machine and you believe the same about me.
I suggest you look at desrt's links though I doubt it will convince you of anything, your mind is already closed shut.

No I can't read because that is a made up number.
Look at the real science that comes out but not covered by the main stream media.

Interesting.

Heard some guy on HLN today, flapping his gums about evil oil and gas empires.  Funny thing was, he was holding his iphone and pointing to some facts that were somehow pertinent to whatever it was that he was saying....  apparently he didn't catch the irony.... his iphone is made at least partly from oil/gas products.

that doesn't surprise me.  Seems like the ones with the biggest mouths against the oil and gas industry travel more and have more petroleum based products that anyone else....

Maybe YOU don't deny it and nobody mentioned Al Gore.

However:
more than 56 percent of Republicans in the 114th Congress deny or question the science behind human-caused climate change. Even though more than 97 percent of climate scientists agree that climate change is occurring and that it is driven by human activity, 53 percent of House Republicans and 72 percent of Senate Republicans deny the occurrence of human-caused climate change.

No one denies it but I like them don't believe the hype. We don't believe Al Gore's "predications"
