Senate approves bill to skip pay raise for Congress in 2011

Friday, April 23, 2010

The Senate passed a bill Thursday that would deny members of Congress a built-in pay raise next year.

Senators and members of the House make $174,000 a year. They receive an automatic cost-of-living pay hike unless they pass legislation to block it -- as they did last year.

The Senate passed the measure, which would deny lawmakers an automatic pay raise of about $1,600 next year, unanimously without a roll-call vote. The House has yet to act on it but probably will go along, given election-year pressures.

The last time Congress opted to take the raise was in 2008.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) makes $223,500, and Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) makes $193,400. President Obama makes $400,000.

I had to forego a merit raise (for almost 2 years at this point) that I actually worked for and earned; I agree with you - if they had to work on merit, they'd get zilch.......

No doubt they do very well - let's not forget that a lot (most?) of them are writing books, being paid as speakers at no end of functions, have their own businesses, etc.   Yep, they do okay for themselves and I've no doubt they can do without the Congressional pay increase.........

And it is not just a pay raise for current congress and senate members . . . since they get their pay for life, right?  (grrrrrrr . . .)  I think they should receive merit pay.  But they'd all get zilch if that was the case.  (I'm in such a good mood today.)

Does anyone think those senators and congressmen make some pretty good jack besides me?  Geez.

My guess is that not taking the pay raise is as others have suggested, all about politics. I am also sure that all the money received from all those special interest groups leaves same very well compensated. I just came back from the grocery and I wonder what will happen with the health care reform  bill when we all starve to death. Everything has gone up except the paycheck. It is getting to be all I can do just to meet living expenses these days. I wonder if I could apply for welfare as it seems to be the thing to do. Me not happy! What used to be able to be gotten for 20 dolla is now 50 dolla

Yeppers, they sure do know its an election year!  ROFL!!!!

"Skipping Their Raise???"   They should have put than same aggregate amount X three, since there "haven't been any cost-of-living" increases for the past three years, into the state's individual Low-Income and Disabled Health Care fund(s). So the previous three years worth of extra perks (assessing the value thereof) if they were to REALLY want to do the right thing, should be written out in personal check form and combined into a "pot"given back to the Medicare/Medicaid Trust Fund, along with passing a new Amendment that the Social Security Trust Fund can (a) no longer be used as Legislature's ATM, (b) all the money taken out of their MUST be paid back by the people who (basically illegally) took it out, (b) hold the legislature as a whole accountable for conspiracy to "aid and abet an illegal alien" for those that voted the law allowing all illegal aliens immediate and full benefits out of the Social Security Trust, through the "illusion" of Medicaid and state DSHS Comunity Services Offices, and sentence all federal or state personnel to the same sentence and/or fines that would be levied against us "common people" if we were arrested for aiding and abetting an illegal alien to commit conspiracy to defraud, and (c) immediately repeal the provision, amendment or law that allows illegal aliens benefits.

Either that, or go ahead and get some good software to be able to speak Mandarin, Japanese and Russian, because when our economy collapses (by just ONE of those countries calling in all their loans) it will be a coordinated effort by all three, and they will (peacefully and legally) OWN approximately 2/3rds of America. When THAT happens you might want to get a good supply of band-aids, because I'm pretty sure if I remember what Americans really are, a very large group of folk's are not going to "go peaceably in homelessness.

I think I'm gonna go with the Mandarin first, at least with the phrases, 'Don't shoot!" and "Let's talk about this!" memorized to perfect Mandarin Chinese. From there I can probably use a pocket translator...

Good point.

I want to acknowledge the ones who willingly forgo the raise as it is the right thing to do when our country is in the deep mess it is.  Now if they pass the raise but give it up to a charity or to the unemployment fund, healthcare for the those who cannot afford it fund, etc...that would be good....but to heap more upon themselves when our deficit is so huge and our future SSI, etc. so shakey....not so good.

Congress taking a raise would be death to all up for election.  Now I would like to see their tidy little pensions gone.  They won't fix Social Security until it becomes part of their lives.

Since I had to fore go a cost of living increase for the past 3 years, along with my "step increase" (merit raise), while Congress was still getting their COLA, I guess it's about time they decided they can do without their raise.

Our costs keep going up - gas, groceries, etc - but our pay stays the same; do the math - eventually, even those of us who are lucky enough to have a job, can't make it anymore.  Then look at our elected officials who get their cost of living adjustment every year, plus all the other "perks" they get.

The lowest paid of those mentioned makes about 7 times more than I do - I would say that they could afford to let one COLA go.  After all, I didn't get my raises but I still had to pay for theirs.
