It was a T-shirt at a high-school on Cinco De Mayo in California ( which was part of Mexico at one time)
Cino de Mayo is a traditional Mexican holiday and my thought is those kids wearing the American flag shirt on that particular day did so as a statement against the Mexican kids celebrating their holiday.
I'm against banning shirts and I'm all for people working together because we are a nation of people with mixed ethnic backgrounds.

A federal court ruled Thursday that a northern California high school did not violate the constitutional rights of its students when school officials made them turn their American flag T-shirts inside out on Cinco de Mayo or be sent home due to fears of racial violence.

The children here are not allowed to wear anythig on their t shirts. Plain ones only and if a child shows up to school violating that rule, they are given a very ugly shirt to change into for the school day.

My thoughts exactly, its not so much the shirt as the antics behind the wearing of it on that particular day. Its just a **** starter and it doesnt belong at school.
Ugh.... I've read the article 3 times. To me, this sounds like a school that has a lot of issues, and a shirt is the easiest thing to blame a potential problem on.
Could these kids have been trying to stir the pot? Sure, its very possible. Could this be a school administration that has little control between racial and gang issues and they used this as a place to "show" that they are trying to do something? Yeah.... no doubt in my mind. If banning these shirts solve all of the problems within this school, I am all for banning it even as ridiculous as it sounds. The problem is far larger than a shirt.

Perhaps these kids were stirring the pot. In fact, its highly likely. If that is the case there is an obvious parenting issue that you can't rely on the school for. At the same time, I'd wonder about the parents of these kids.... how old are they and how were they raised? Gang mentality, if its not learned in a broken home it is often learned in the street.

This notorious punk (local law enforcement knows the whole family well) came up to my son and his friends and tried to pick a fight with the smaller kid. My son told this kid to "buzz off" and the kid took a swipe at my kid. My kid 2 hand pushed the kid to the ground.... this was off school grounds, after school hours, and the teacher just saw the other kid get shoved.
Regardless of about 8 eye witness reports saying to the contrary, it was my kid that was held responsible for the entire situation.... because the administration is afraid to approach the other kids family. That *****, its unfair and they got a good piece of my mind over the subject. It fell on deaf ears.

I'm also assume they were to stir the pot but glad they did. This is America and you can celebrate any "holiday" you want from other countries but remember this is America and OUR flag is the red white and blue. So OUR flag should is of higher standing then all others. If you feel so passionately about the Mexican flag then go back to mexico or ireland or italy.

Maybe its just me or maybe I am a racist, but I don't often see any other nationality so proudly support the country they are from while shunning the country in which they live. Thank god this is America.... you can do that with out getting shot, almost.
Y'know, I actually don't care for the idea of even having flags because it supports the us against them mentality.

By the obvious fear on his face, he realized he made a big mistake and damn sure didn’t argue with the Cops when they told him they were removing him for his safety.

Hm. So, those who get all hyped up about May 5th and buy salsa, margarita mix and Corona beer are good for celebrating but if a Mexican American celebrates something important to their nationality, they are bad?
I can't imagine a school where race tension is so high that kids would make a huge deal out of wearing an American flag to school that day to thwart the patriotism to their nationality other kids might be showing. Sounds terrible. I lived in Texas and it wasn't competitive or tense like this and I too, if I were at the school, would do what I could to tone it down. No t shirts for anyone. If I hadn't done that, I'd be disappointed in the kids that showed up in American flag t shirts that day to make a statement. I enjoy tolerance and could care less if someone is proud of their birth place or their parents birth place or their grandparents birth place. Kind of disgusting that bothers people in my opinion.

Truth is, if I had a strong affiliation with my natural heritage, it would be an honor to show that. We are a diverse nation and certainly not so insecure that someone showing patriotism to their heritage on one day of celebration shouldn't intimidate us or anger us. That is so odd to me.

And if I came to this country and wanted to wear a shirt with the flag on it from where it came from . . . why would that bother anyone?

Then why be in America if you want to celebrate how great your country is? The only part the actually bothers me is the ruling in this case that American studens were denied the right to wear OUR flag while other American students could wear a flag of another country.
Why not celebrate something that is meaningful to you? It doesn't mean that you can't appreciate MaNY different things in life. We are evolved human beings that can love that we are Irish, German, etc. and also love America. We are not simple people but complex human beings, right?

Okay, you are kind of missing what I am saying. Small picture (where you are stuck) is that no, it isn't right to ask the kids to turn their flags inside out. BIG picture (more important to me) is that they were wearing the shirts not to show pride but to be ugly Americans and stick it to those who want to . . . for a day . . . openly celebrate where their family is from.
