The heading alone doesn't explain the context.

It was a T-shirt at a high-school on Cinco De Mayo in California ( which was part of Mexico at one time)
Cino de Mayo is a traditional Mexican holiday and my thought is those kids wearing the American flag shirt on that particular day did so as a statement against the Mexican kids celebrating their holiday.

I'm against banning shirts and I'm all for people working together because we are a nation of people with mixed ethnic backgrounds.

A federal court ruled Thursday that a northern California high school did not violate the constitutional rights of its students when school officials made them turn their American flag T-shirts inside out on Cinco de Mayo or be sent home due to fears of racial violence.

It was Cinco de Mayo....A little respect goes a long way.

Im all for school uniforms so we dont have the nonsense to begin with.

The children here are not allowed to wear anythig on their t shirts. Plain ones only and if a child shows up to school violating that rule, they are given a very ugly shirt to change into for the school day.

My thoughts exactly, its not so much the shirt as the antics behind the wearing of it on that particular day. Its just a **** starter and it doesnt belong at school.

Ugh....  I've read the article 3 times.  To me, this sounds like a school that has a lot of issues, and a shirt is the easiest thing to blame a potential problem on.

Could these kids have been trying to stir the pot?  Sure, its very possible.  Could this be a school administration that has little control between racial and gang issues and they used this as a place to "show" that they are trying to do something?  Yeah.... no doubt in my mind.  If banning these shirts solve all of the problems within this school, I am all for banning it even as ridiculous as it sounds.  The problem is far larger than a shirt.

This school has a lot more issues than some kids wearing an American flag shirt, in an American school, on American soil.

This is America and you can celebrate Cinco de Mayo all you want, but you can't wear an American flag shirt???  Are we to assume that everyone wearing an American shirt with a flag on it, on Cinco de Mayo is trying to incite violence?  Come on America......

I believe the kids motives were to stir the pot.
I’m not sure if I agree with the Court’s Ruling.
If the school wants to avoid problems like this, the School needs to over haul its dress code instead of tying up the Courts.
Let’s look at it from this angle, if on July 3rd (no school on 4th of July, Independence Day), Hispanics wore Mexican Flags on their shirts and the school took the same action. Would these same parents concerned about First Amendment Rights, support the Hispanic students?

“The school had a history of problems between white and Latino students on that day, and also had a documented history of violence between gang members and between racial groups.”
The school has this problem because of poor parenting.

We have had School Uniforms for years here. Personally, I think all schools should have them. It helps slowing down Gang issues, Peer Pressure, etc. Kids can be cruel. At that age, they are struggling hard to find themselves and don’t need the added pressure of keeping up with the latest fashion.

Perhaps these kids were stirring the pot.  In fact, its highly likely.  If that is the case there is an obvious parenting issue that you can't rely on the school for.  At the same time, I'd wonder about the parents of these kids.... how old are they and how were they raised?  Gang mentality, if its not learned in a broken home it is often learned in the street.

Back to the rights issue.  PC.  I'd guess that the administration would support the Mexican kids wearing the Mexican flag.

Speaking about issues like this close to home, I know that the administration has let bad kids continue to be bad kids because the parents are too hard to handle.  It's bull.  Everyone is afraid to call it like it is.

We have a "0 Tolerance Policy" when it comes to violence here.  Both/all parties involved in an altercation are to be suspended.  This notorious punk (local law enforcement knows the whole family well) came up to my son and his friends and tried to pick a fight with the smaller kid.  My son told this kid to "buzz off" and the kid took a swipe at my kid.  My kid 2 hand pushed the kid to the ground.... this was off school grounds, after school hours, and the teacher just saw the other kid get shoved.

Regardless of about 8 eye witness reports saying to the contrary, it was my kid that was held responsible for the entire situation.... because the administration is afraid to approach the other kids family.  That *****, its unfair and they got a good piece of my mind over the subject.  It fell on deaf ears.

I'm also assume they were to stir the pot but glad they did. This is America and you can celebrate any "holiday" you want from other countries but remember this is America and OUR flag is the red white and blue. So OUR flag should is of higher standing then all others. If you feel so passionately about the Mexican flag then go back to mexico or ireland or italy.

I am of Italian and Irish descent but never associate myself with those flags because 1st and foremost I am American.

Maybe its just me or maybe I am a racist, but I don't often see any other nationality so proudly support the country they are from while shunning the country in which they live.  Thank god this is America.... you can do that with out getting shot, almost.

Y'know, I actually don't care for the idea of  even having flags because it supports the us against them mentality.

We are all citizens of this planet and dividing ourselves by a colored piece of cloth is just that~ divisive.

As a nation of diverse people we should be able to be inclusive.
What I've found about immigrants is the children all become American kids, whether their parents come from Mexico, China or elsewhere.

We don’t take to kindly to it here in Baton Rouge. This A-Hole made the mistake of announcing he was going to Burn Our Flag on Facebook. By the obvious fear on his face, he realized he made a big mistake and damn sure didn’t argue with the Cops when they told him they were removing him for his safety.

Hm.  So, those who get all hyped up about May 5th and buy salsa, margarita mix and Corona beer are good for celebrating but if a Mexican American celebrates something important to their nationality, they are bad?

I can't imagine a school where race tension is so high that kids would make a huge deal out of wearing an American flag to school that day to thwart the patriotism to their nationality other kids might be showing.  Sounds terrible.  I lived in Texas and it wasn't competitive or tense like this and I too, if I were at the school, would do what I could to tone it down.  No t shirts for anyone.  If I hadn't done that, I'd be disappointed in the kids that showed up in American flag t shirts that day to make a statement.  I enjoy tolerance and could care less if someone is proud of their birth place or their parents birth place or their grandparents birth place.  Kind of disgusting that bothers people in my opinion.

My kids wear a "kiss me, I'm Irish" shirt to school on St. Patty's day.  Maybe some kids will show up with American flag shirts and make a scene.  Stupid.

Haven't these kids seen West Side Story?  Geez.  (kidding . . .  but it is a tale as old as time now, isn't it?)

I'm loving my Mid West city . . .   things that are harmless stay that way.  For now, anyway.

BTW:  My son's shirtt actually says "I'm lucky because I'm Irish".  It's MY green shirt ready for St. Patty's day that says "Kiss me, I'm Irish"

Maybe there would be less tension if people didn't make such a big deal out of things.

May 5th in America is nothing more then a reason to drink and for corporations to market it so they can make $$$.

It's like America celebrating Boxing Day. Stupid to do so and if some Canucks wanted to wear the maple leaf then Americans should wear the Stars and Bars.

Americans celebrate all kinds of things Vance.  I wouldn't call it stupid to be honest and to me, it seems silly to let such a thing bother you.

Truth is, if I had a strong affiliation with my natural heritage, it would be an honor to show that.  We are a diverse nation and certainly not so insecure that someone showing patriotism to their heritage on one day of celebration shouldn't intimidate us or anger us.  That is so odd to me.

We wear starts and stripes on July 4th.  We wear green shirts on St. Patty's day.  Maybe we wear a shirt we got in Mexico on Cinco de Mayo.  Maybe it even has a Mexican flag on it.  My son wears a soccer jersey his dad got him in Italy that has the Italian flag on it all the time.  He loves it.  Does his wearing another flag mean he isn't American enough?  Don't get that.  And if I came to this country and wanted to wear a shirt with the flag on it from where it came from . . . why would that bother anyone?

Personally, we take opportunities to teach our kids about other cultures. My son has a bestie that moved here from Central America.  His family speaks Spanish most of the time at home.  We love it . . .   our son goes to their house and is immersed into another culture.  Would I want this family to not speak Spanish?  No, I hope my son learns it.  Would I want them to decide that they should only be loyal to America now and throw away their roots?  No.  If that kid wanted to wear the flag of the country where he was born on a holiday that was celebrated in his country---  why would anyone flipping care?  Very weird to me.

Then why be in America if you want to celebrate how great your country is? The only part the actually bothers me is the ruling in this case that American studens were denied the right to wear OUR flag while other American students could wear a flag of another country.

Why not celebrate something that is meaningful to you?  It doesn't mean that you can't appreciate MaNY different things in life.  We are evolved human beings that can love that we are Irish, German, etc. and also love America.  We are not simple people but complex human beings, right?

I think in a situation in which the fear of violence or race tension is prevalent and someone is just trying to stir the pot (and being intolerant)--  then you have to shut it down.  Those kids parents should tell them to be kinder to their fellow students in my opinion and not let them wear the t shirt just to be 'in their face'.  But if it were a true problem, I'd ban all t shirts for that day to be fair.  But it is ridiculous that our youth is intolerant like that in my opinion.

We are AMERICANS. If our great ancestors came from another country great, but we are Americans.

Intolorant because other kids want to show pride for OUR flag? Far from being intolerant.

Ha, well.  I'm going to ask you to plug all the circuits in Vance.  The intolerance comes in the form of caring if someone is proud of their duel status in this country.

While I don't agree that turning the flag inside out on the surface is something I'd be happy about . . .  I have a problem with bratty Americans who think that only America matters and that someone who is 'newer' to this country and wants to show some pride for their heritage is doing anything wrong. Really . . . that gives a BAD name to being American.

So, surface level . . .   no.  The kids shouldn't have to turn their shirts inside out but the big picture was for why they chose to wear it.  And that is as un-American as it gets and really, I'd  be ashamed for them to wear a symbol of this country for that reason.

So we have to respect the right of others to show pride in another country but showing pride in our own country is frowned upon because??

Everything in America is just a bunch of PC BS.

Okay, you are kind of missing what I am saying.  Small picture (where you are stuck) is that no, it isn't right to ask the kids to turn their flags inside out.  BIG picture (more important to me) is that they were wearing the shirts not to show pride but to be ugly Americans and stick it to those who want to . . . for a day . . .   openly celebrate where their family is from.

Big picture is intolerance but you have to stop and think about it.

BTW, in this age of ex pats . . .   do you think the kids whose parents took assignments in other countries or they've moved there with their families  should no longer care about America?

Never said anyone should not care but if I moved to Italy I would not be lighting off fire works on the 4th.

It is not an ugly American to show pride no matter what the reason is and we don't fully know why these kids wore the shirts. But if latino kids want to show pride of Mexico (but there is a huge reason why they left) then fine, but don't start junk if in America someone wants to show pride in America on the same day. Nothing about May 5th is special in this country.

I see the big picture but intolerance is not part of it.

Well, we have to disagree then.

If it were my kids and they were pulling out the flag shirt because they knew kids were celebrating cinco de maya and they wanted to make a statement "THIS IS AMERICA!" . . .   I'd feel like I failed as a parent.

Because I value diversity and try to instill those values into my kids.  And if I fail, I'll be really disappointed in myself.

Those kids' parents failed them in my eyes.

But Vance, it is clear we don't look at this the same way.  We have different ideas of how a kid should act toward their fellow students.
