WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government banned BP Plc on Wednesday from new federal contracts over its "lack of business integrity" in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, possibly imperiling the company's role as a top U.S. offshore oil and gas producer and the No. 1 military fuel supplier.

The suspension, announced by the Environmental Protection Agency, comes on the heels of BP's November 15 agreement with the U.S. government to plead guilty to criminal misconduct in the Gulf of Mexico disaster, the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history. The British energy giant agreed to pay $4.5 billion in penalties, including a record $1.256 billion criminal fine.

The ruling will temporarily bar BP from winning any new federal oil leases, the Interior Department said in a statement. The Defense Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the impact of the ruling on BP's military fuel contracts. BP is one of the largest holders of federal oil leases and has deep ties to the U.S. military, with an estimated $1.35 billion in military fuel contracts for 2011.

The EPA's decision came the same day that the Interior Department planned to auction off roughly 20 million new acres of federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico for oil exploration. BP will not be allowed to bid on those parcels, the department said.

BP noted that the federal government already has granted it more than 50 new offshore leases in the Gulf of Mexico since the end of the spill

I think they have to honor the legal contracts already in place. Just a guess.
But it looks like BP is scrambling and serious now. Hope so anyway.
It should set a precedent for other oil companies, I would think.
