6 Year Old with Fever

I have a 6 year old child, she has had 102-104 fever since Saturday.  She complains of her throat hurting and aching.  We went to the doctor today and they confirmed she does not have flu and does not have strep.  However, she does have what looks like to be an abscess on her top right gum line.  Could this be the cause of her fever and swollen glands?
