Cavity on Root of Tooth

Can a cavity on the root of a tooth be filled.  I have a cavity on the root of my front tooth and I was told nothing can be done until I have tooth pain and then it has to be pulled.  I do not want to loose my front tooth.

This discussion is related to cavities between teeth and possibly under gumline?.

yes, it can be treated and restored with proper materials...
it is called root caries, it is preferably being treated early.
However in some situation if the tooth is severely affected and weakened by the caries, and rendered as a non restorable tooth... extraction may be indicated
