I don't treat furcations so I'm not exactly sure what treatments are available at this point. I do know that a few years ago treating a furcation was very difficult and it was impossible to generate any bone in that area. I'm not sure if there are any new materials or techniques which can address the issue but as far as I know, its mostly prevention. If you're concerned about it, you can ask your dentist to give you a referral to a specialist (periodontist).
I think it'll depend on alot of factors such as your oral hygiene, how often you go back for dental treatment, whether or not they feel that periodontal surgery is necessary or can be beneficial for further prevention of disease. I've had patients who've kept their teeth for quite awhile with great hygiene and frequent dental cleanings/check ups. I believe for one particular patient, he was coming in every 2-3 months for a dental cleaning.
OK, for what reason would they deem that periodontal surgery not be necessary? Could the tooth last for say years? And roughly how many?
Is there not something that could be inserted in the furcation to prevent further bone loss?
It's just that I'm absolutely terrified of having any surgery.
