Cracked Root?

Last week I had two fillings which were for teeth that are side by side.  Within a week I had cleaning and I let the hygentist know that area was sensitive although it wasn't prior to the fillings.  She let the dentist know & was directly referred to a specialist for a possible cracked root for one of those teeth (they can't determine).  This seems strange to me due to I've not had any pain or discomfort prior to the cavities being filled.  Is there any possibility that a root can be cracked while filling a cavity? Any information would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Last week I went to my dentist for a routine check up and cleaning. He also took 2 xrays of my back molars. Everything appeared fine and I had no problems going for my checkup. After leaving the office I had lunch a few hours later and had pain on my lower right side molar when I chewed my food. Now I have a dull ache in that tooth and have been avoiding any chewing on that side. I might add that tooth has crown from 2003. It's a bit odd I had no problems before going to the dentist and now I do, it *****! Any ideas of what could be wrong? Thanks for any help.

it could have cracked during the filling or an existing crack can enlarge especially if the filling is large. there is nothing the dentist can do to prevent cracks anywhere on the tooth not just the root. you just were unlucky. theres not a whole lot that can be done for root fractures i am living with one now but eventually it will need to come out.
