Does a tooth with a crown have to be extracted if a abscess appears after 10yrs

I have had a crown on my tooth for about 10yrs which has recently got an abscess. My dentist has put me on antibiotics as expected but has said i need the tooth extracting. He has given me this as the only option with out taking an x-ray. Is there more that can be done to save the tooth/crown? Should i get a second opinion?
