Exposed nerve in my tooth?

I had a feeling I had an exposed nerve in my back molar so I went to my dentist (after 3 years without beeing seen).  He said I needed deep gum cleaning at the site, we did that, and now it is more painful than before.  If I touch an area between my teeth the pain sends me through the roof.  I do not want to go back to him just yet, if at all.  I just want releif from the pain.  It is not constant, but consistent.  Any suggestions?
