Gauze stuck in extraction site

Hi there, I had a tooth extracted 2 weeks ago to the day.  The dentist packed the socket with gauze to prevent dry socket as I am a smoker.  Well 2 weeks later I am sure there is still gauze stuck up there as I can taste it and feel it with my tongue, I'm thinking it is now stuck in my gum as the gum has healed over a bit. I cant get back into the dentist for another week as he only works one day.  Does anyone know what the procedure will be for removing it?  Slightly worried as I hate visiting dentists (dont we all) and not particularly keen on getting it surgically removed.  Should I see another dentist or will it be ok to wait another week? Thankyou!

Hello,
After a tooth extraction the gauze should be kept firmly in place, by biting down on the pad or using finger pressure, for about half an hour to an hour. If you doubt that this gauze has not come out and is placed inside you may need to see your dentist. This gauze piece can act as a focus of infection and lead to abscess formation. Treatment can be decided only after a dental examination. I hope it helps.
Best wishes and regards!
