How long does pain remain after crown lengthening??

This past Wednesday I had a crown lengthening on tooth # 13. This tooth previously had a root canal and I was told by the periodontist that after about 2 days, the pain would subside.

I mean expect there to be some discomfort but man I am in so much pain and nothing is working to alleviate it!! There is a constant throbbing in this tooth, it feels as though the pain is radiating to other teeth and not only that the tooth in front of the one where I had the lengthening has so much pressure it feels as if it is going to explode. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NUTS!!

I don't think there is an infection because I've been taking my antibiotics ( Amoxil 500mg ) and I know it has only been a few days but I cannot take this pain..

I've taken so many Ibuprofen 800's and Tylenol #3's that I've lost count.. I've gargled with warm salt water, I've used warm/cold compresses.. I don't know what else to do. Please help!!

Taking ibuprofen 200-400mg and acetaminophen together and around the clock, every 6 hour can yield maximal pain killing effect. Moreover, if there is evidence of infection and amoxicillin is not effective after 72 hours , switching to second line antibiotics is warranted.post op pain of crown lengthening procedure rarely lasts more than 48 hours. Oral rinse if chlohexidibe twice a day is generally recommended for oral surgical procedure.lastly, cessation of cigarette smoking is strongly recommended.

Thank you so much for your response Scott.

Turns out there was an infection so I was switched to Aziythromycin (250mg) and Methylprednisolone (tapered 4mg's). I have been taking both prescriptions as per my doctor however I still feel pain in the tooth and at this point pain killers aren't working.

I honestly feel at this point the next resort is extraction. I really wanted to save the tooth but I don't thin there is anything else I can do.

Your post op condition is extremely unusual. Cone beam CT imaging study is warranted to rule out root fracture .
