MI paste/white spots/etching neccesary?

I have white spots on my teeth and purchased some MI paste and a niqhtguard.  However, they didn't tell me that most dentists 'etch' the teeth first (putting an acid on to make teeth accept MI paste better).  Is this step neccesary?  My teeth only got the white spots since I started drinking a lot of acidic drinks so it's funny that I need to add more acids to my teeth for them to accept this MI paste but...

Actually there is lots of research out there on the web, including before and after pictures of this MI paste working wonders (dentists have been preforming it, this is not an at-home thing).  My dentist didn't seem to know about it either, but plenty do... it's disheartening that this information isn't getting spread throughout the field, perhaps because veneers coughs up more money?

White spots on the teeth are usually from a high fever as a child, and there's not much you can do for them except getting veneers to cover the front of the tooth. Acidic drinks are very hard on the teeth and you need to limit your intake.

White spot lesion of tooth  is associated with demineralization, which may be re mineralized by local application of fluoride. Consultation with a dentist is advised.
