Need New Crown - How much should I pay?

My teeth have gotten whiter in the last few years and as a result my front right crown (please see attached photo) is noticeably yellow. This along with the dark ridge above the tooth is something I wish to get corrected. I know the only way to get a super white crown is to get it replaced. I remember distinctly though, that when I got this current crown, it was "A2", which was second to the whitest that was available from that dentist. Does this make sense? Is there a chart? If this is the second to whitest available, I may not choose to get the crown. To the question at hand, if and when I decide to get a new front crown, how much should I pay? I don't want to be taken for. Thank you.

OH Thank you! This information has been more than helpful! As for the chart analogy, I totally understand what you're saying. My other front tooth is a bit clear (if this makes sense) so with what you said, it brings me comfort that I can get something very close to what I have. My insurance won't cover it (they consider it a cosmetic procedure) but I can save up to a $1000 over this year for sure for it. A great smile is worth more to my self esteem than a $1000.

There is chart that is used to determine the shade of a crown. But there are also different charts. Its kind of like having a red BMW and a red Kia.  Both are red, but the shades may be slightly different, if this makes sense.  But your doctor will specify to the lab which "brand " to use when comparing the shades. A2 is considerably white, but you can also have A1 & depending on how white the crown needs to be, you can have opaque colors.  There are many different factors for determining the shade for a crown, and there are also many different combinations of colors.

As for price, depending on the material, your insurance coverage & fees (whether or not insurance will contribute anything towards replacement), and lab fees, I would say an average price would be between $800-$1150.
