Oral Thrush

I was prescribed a slew of antibiotics a few months ago. 4 separate regimens over 2 months for some bacterial infection while in asia.

Zithro/Cipro/Zithro/Cipro

I understand that this is a heavy dose of antibiotic.

I started getting the thrush a week after my first regimen of Zithro.

I've been off antibiotics now for about 6 weeks. But I've had the thush now aprox 3 months. Most likely due to every couple of weeks I had to take another antibiotic and it was just making matters worse.

I have seen my doctor obviously and was diagnosed with oral thrush.

He has prescribed Daktarin 2% oral gel x4 daily. This hasnt helped at all and I stopped taking it about a week or two ago. (had been taking it for nearly three months)

Does thrush usually last this long?

I've been doing pretty good with the diet. Although I recently read that starches can make things worse, and I've been eating the **** outa some french fries. I thought they were safe. I pretty much kept my diet to lean meats and steamed veggies and potatoes of different sorts.

I've also abstained from alcohol, but to be fair, I did have two days out on the town during the last three months (one as recently as last weekend) and I really hit the bottle hard. To inculde mixed drinks with cola.

But common...this long? If someone can tell me I can chill that'd be great. And yes I took an HIV test.

Any help? I dont think my doc is going to prescribe me anything different. But I can get prescription drugs here very easily.

Is there any danger in say taking a 3 day dose of flucozole?

Hi,
Oral thrush can be hard to rid yourself of once you get it.  Do the yogurt or acidophiles pills.  It can help as much as any antibiotic.  Nystatin is an RX medication but has very good success.

In the meantime, start to use a tongue brush and try gargling with warm salt water (1/4tsp in 8oz of warm water) four or five times a day.  Use the tongue brush both morning and night.  DO NOT scrap your tongue raw.  Gentle is the key.  Also be sure you are well hydrated.

If that doesn't help, get back to the dr and have him rx you something specifically for Candida.

GOOD LUCK!
My very best to you,

wow thank you for your quick response. I'll try the yogurt. I hear plan non sweetened, but is regular yogurt ok too? It's hard to get anything here in Cambodia. The market does have yogurt tho.

And to touch on something really quick, you seem to know what you're talking about, still having this for 6 weeks after my last dose of antibiotic...I shouldnt freak out about this too much should I?

Hi,
Start eating yogurt.  Be sure to get the kind with live acidophiles in it.  If you don't like yogurt get acidophiles in pill form.

This will start to help normalize the flora and fauna you have in your bowel.  Antibiotics unfortunately destroy not only the bad bacteria, but it kills off the good ones too.  That environment is perfect for thrush.

Try the yogurt.  It can take a little while to start to normalize things but it does work.
Also, on the medication side, nystatin may work for you.  Ask your dr.

Hope this helps.
Best to you,
Gellia
