Pain 4 weeks post RTC and temporary crown

4 weeks ago I had root canal on molar, also permanent crown. Dentist said the root canal was finished in that one visit, he'd gotten finished, but I would return when they called with new crown. I did have terrible throbbing, to my jaw, ear, up my eye and surrounding teeth. Also took an X-ray and said everything looked wonderful....He checked my bite and shaved off quite a bit.
Later that week I  went to put on permanent crown and told him I was still taking Advil, Vicodin, every 3 hours and it was still throbbing. Most of the tme I laid on the couch with a heating pad on my face.
I told doc I wanted to try to look at the bite again but he said he'd already tried that and shaved off a lot and since when I tap the tooth I get terrible pain and cannot even eat on that side I need an endodontic spec since she has microscopic equipment to find the problem. It hurts worst at night. I can now go 5 hours between pain meds, sometimes 6.
My husband is upset that I have to pay another doctor to fix me up. Already spent $2000. But I am in such pain we know I have to get some help. I wake one to two times a night in pain. Last night over a period of 3 hrs trying to fall asleep in pain, I took a Vicodin and total 7 ibuprofen.
Last year I got an implant from this dentist and it took me 4 months to recover. Maybe he's too rough?
Should I just ask for the permanent crown or do my symptoms sound like I still need more root canal work?/possibly extraction?

I am experiencing some of the same things. On 11/11/13 all hell broke loose on me the last two months have been a nightmare. 10/3/13 I saw my family dentist who said my tooth #14 had so many fillings it was leaking and needed a crown. 10/4/13 I moved out of state and instead of listening to his recommendation for a dentist I chose my own and I'm paying the price. I had the precrown treatment which was horrible, the temp cracked had to go back in have a new temp made, pain and sensitivity still persisted had permanent crown put on and the sensitivity got MUCH worse. My new dentist then recommended me to an endo and she said the root was dying and started my root canal on 12/16/13. The endo said if the temp crown is bothering you the permanent will too. I have to go back  on 1/14/14 for her to finish it. After spending over $3000 I am still having problems with the tooth my jaw is acting up with spasms that are effecting the one side of my head, headaches, ear aches, pressure and sensitivity that jumps all over my mouth to different teeth, my eye hurts. I'm constantly massaging the side of my head my neck hurts. I barely eat for fear of pain. I think it's a sinus problem or maybe tmj or an infection. Now I am waiting for the dentist I should've seen to begin with to call me so I can make an appt with him to see if he can figure what's going on. I've been living on ibuprofen this whole time  and my endo put me on a steroid for a few days horrible reaction had to stop it. My partner doesn't even know what to say anymore she doesn't want to hear it it's all I talk about it's literally taken over my life. Even when people ask how i am i say fine i just can't talk about it anymore. I have no idea how much more I'm gonna have to spend and if this issue can be fixed. These last two months have been so horrible I feel like it's never going to get better and any joy has been completely sucked out of my life I didn't even celebrate the holidays. I always think of before 11/11/13 it feels like forever ago now. If I were you I would go back to the endo see if they can help. Maybe even change dentists that's what I'm doing maybe it will start to turn around but at this point I'm losing faith. Hope you have better luck then me.

It sounds like the root canal didn't work.  Sometimes it'll take longer than a week to recover but its a gradual "get better" type of recovery.  In this instance, it seems that there's been no improvement over time.  You should probably elect to see the endodontist (specialist) and see what they think is going on.  They may need to retreat the tooth or they may determine there's a fracture somewhere deep on the tooth and it may need to be removed.
