Pain after tooth extraction for abcess

My partner was having severe pain from an abcessed tooth. However, she has no dental insurance and is unemployed and the free dental clinic was not taking patients. The doctor at the free clinic thought she had 4 abcessed teeth and prescribed antibiotics to help with the infection until she could get to a dentist. She was finally able to get into the sliding scale clinic about a week later. The dentist said that he only saw 1 abcess and removed the tooth. Since the extraction last week, she has been in severe pain not only where the tooth was, but also along her jaw, up the side of her face, in her neck as well as having headaches from the pain. She went back to the free clinic thinking maybe there was still an infection present. The doctor saw no signs and said he thinks it is an exposed nerve. He did give her another course of antibiotics just in case. What can be done about this problem? Will it go away on its own or is some other course of treatment recommended? OTC pain medication really doesn't do much to relieve the pain.

after having a tooth pulled it leaves a hard trama to your jaw and around the area it was pulled from so yes you will be in pain and yes some swelling will happen. I had the same issue after having a bad tooth removed.it took about 2 months for that knot to finally go away, use an ice pack on the side ot where the knot is, it will help sooth the pain. 2 days ago i just had 6 teeth pulled and guess what, i got the knot back again. after the numbing left i was in alot of pain, but using an ice pack helpedreleave the pain by atleast 97%, she may feel a small throbbing but not the pain as much. if she can use the ice pack while sleeping that will help her sleep.  Hope this helps.
