Rampant Decay

Over a 6 month period have developed excessive number of cavities. Dentist finally says I have Dry Mouth (Xerostomia) and starts talking about extracting numerous teeth and doing implants. Not acceptable. Health history - heart attack March 2013 - now on HBP med Metoprolol,:and generic for lipitor and plavix. No answers from primary doctor or dentist on cause. Lab work normal. Trying to determine cause of Xerostomia and best treatment to prevent future problems. Help!!!

Xerostomia most commonly occurs as a side effect of many medications like medications for blood pressure, antihistamines, diuretics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, and many others.Few other causes of dry mouth are radiation treatments to the head and neck, salivary gland diseases, hormonal imbalance, diabetes and autoimmune disorders like Sjogrens syndrome,SLE,rheumatoid arthritis etc.A complete medical evaluation is necessary for appropriate diagnosis and management of your condition.
