Refered pain and cown pain sensitive to touch

I have been experiencing minor pain on my left bottom wisdom tooth.  Previously my dentinst performed a root canal on this tooth to save it. I only have this tooth and a crowned molar on this side.  I went to the dentist for my 6 month cleaning and expressed my concern. He X-rayed this side and said there wasn't anything visable or no infection(7/5). While cleaning my teeth that wisdom tooth was experiencing pain that brought tears to my eyes. The dentist prescribed Tylenol 3. The next day while brushing with warm water it hit the tooth with the crown. AND MORE TEARS  That pain then affected my whole left side. The today(7/8) the pain has been centralized with the molar that has the crown. The tooth is sensitive to biting and touching. It also looks a little swollen

What could have the dentist missed?

Where is the pain really coming from?

Both teeth have had root canals.  The root canal procedure occurred before he crowned the tooth. I will be at my dentist's door bright and early.  I am also experiecing a slight fever today.

the pain you are having (ie extreme sensitivity) is not consistent with pain from a tooth that already had root canal. It sounds like it is coming from the tooth that has the crown (I am assuming that root canal therapy has not benn done on this tooth). I would see a root canal specialist to evaluate the tooth that is bothering you-- which seems NOT to be the tooth that already had a root canal procedure. He can check the wisdom tooth also while you are there.

It sounds to me like the nerve in the tooth with the crown is non- vital, which means the nerve is dead and that the tooth needs root canal therapy. I would get to see him asap.
