Sensitive Teeth

For years, I have suffered from sensitive teeth. The pain from cold objects literally drive me mad. One bad habit that I know is causing the sensitivity is my avid consumption of acidic drinks, which I am trying to give up. I have sought the services of a periodontist, who said that I have the beginning stages of periodontal disease. I have set up an appointment for a scaling, but other than that, the doctor just recommended Sensodyne for my sensitivity, which I've been using for two years with no avail. Is there any surgery that I could have to stop the sensitivity? I thought about just capping my top and bottom teeth with porcelain crowns, but I've heard that causes sensitivity to worsen. Any suggestions?

Hi,
I have one thing I can suggest as having been in your place.  Mostly, continue with the toothpaste for sensitive teeth.

When you have the beginning stages of periodontal disease, pockets are formed around the tooth base.  This holds fluids (like acidic sodas) in the pocket and around the dentin of the tooth.  The dentin is where the tubules leading to the nerve are.   Pain sensation is transmitted through these tubules. Toothpaste may or may not reach where you need it.

When you have the planing and scaling done it will help, but you'll have to keep pockets that may remain and any exposed dentin VERY clean.  Otherwise the same feeling will continue.

What I did was let my mouth heal well and then go and get dental piks.
They are little plastic brushes with a pick end and a brush end ("The Doctors" makes a great one).  I use the brush end to clean the pockets that I still have every night.
I also go to my periodontist for a professional cleaning by their hygienist every three months.

My teeth don't hurt anymore.

It did take some time though.  I think all you can do is persevere.

The most drastic measure would be root canals and crowns.  Just crowns may not solve the dental pocket problem that will probably still exist.

Hope this helps.

My best to you,
Gellia
