Synthroid and bone loss in your mouth

Because of a chroncs low thyroid condition, I  will be on synthroid pills for life. My dentist says that can cause bone loss and its happening to me,  I cannot go off the synthroid,  Is there anything other than calcium tablets I can take to offset  the damage the thryoid pills are doing to my teeth.

I don't really manage thyroid problems but since its a side effect of your medication, you may want to discuss with your primary care physician.

I did do a little reading into it and they were some researchers who felt that everyone has a "normal" level of thyroid hormone.  It may be possible your "normal" level is different than their standard.  But again, its something that should be discussed with your doctor because you don't want to be too "low" either.

Yes, my thyroid levels are checked every 3 months.  I am in the normal range as we speak.  But I have to stay on the synthroid to maintain normal levels..  I have read synthyroid usage long term causes bone loss in your teeth. Do you agree with that.  My dentist says my gums look good, they never bleed yet I am losing bone rapidly. He thinks its the medication.  Also my calcium levels test positive.  Help!

Does your primary care physician check your thyroid levels while you're on medication?  They may need to reduce the dosage if you're experiencing symptoms of hyperthyroidism due to the medication
