TMJ problems and jaw expansion

I have a good bite, with the possible exception (it's hard to tell) of an overbite (not overjet, I know people often get this wrong), but I have a very small and narrow lower jaw as well as a narrow upper jaw.

When I open my mouth very wide (wider than when I eat or talk) I hear a sound in my TMJ, but I don't know if it is the popping or clicking people usually describe.

I'm 21.

Do you think I have or am at risk of developing TMJ problems? I would like to expand my jaws for cosmetic reasons, do you think this would help or hurt any potential TMJ problems?

When you say expand, do you mean to expand the arch size of the jaw?  That would require surgery most likely although a palatal expander or some other appliance may be able to do it but I think at your age, it may be difficult as you've stopped growing.  You may need to consult with an orthodontist and get it evaluated.  Sorry, I don't handle cases such as yours so I can't speak with full confidence about what may or may be a good option for you.

I forgot to add, I'm looking to expand the jaws without surgery.
