If x-ray doesn't reveal pathology of edentulous area, non-odontogenous pain or paresthesia is suspected. Clinical differential diagnosis includes, but not limited to, neurovascular orofacial pain, atypical odontalgia, traumatic trigeminal neuralgia, as wellas prerigeminal neuralgia. Seeing an orofaical pain specialist is advised.
ask for an xray of the area, if he refuses, get a second opinion somewhere else. there is always a chance that something isnt quite right, but if it looks fine on the xray, then they would just say its a phantom pain, which is not unheard of, its like the area remembering something not there.
