Why do I have another infection 2 months after root canal?

I had a root canal and the dentist had to remove my front top tooth and put in a peg (?).  He put me on antibiotics prior to this because my tooth under my crown had rotted and my crown came off.  After he did the root canal and put on my temporary crown, my tooth ( or lack of ) started pulsing and my face swelled up, especially my upper lip and nose.  I had to go to the ER and they gave me an antibiotic and anti inflammatory.  It responded well.  Now, two months later, it's the same thing.  Yesterday I just had the pulsing and a bump under my gum above the missing tooth along with tenderness and slight swelling.  I went in to the dentist office, he wasn't in, and they took an xray and gave me Cleocin yesterday.  I woke up this morning, 2 a.m., and my face is swollen, headache and earache.  Can you tell me what is going on?  I'm losing faith with this dentist.

It all depends on your dentist's policy.   In my case my dentist performed a very difficult root canal on a back molar but there were still fragments of nerve that he just wasn't able to reach, through no fault of his own.   I was referred to an endodontist who did the root canal again.   However my dentist was very good enough to refund all my money so I could put this towards the cost of the endodontist.   I've been going to my dentist for almost 10 years now so it will all depend on how nice a dentist you have.   Good luck.

It just sounds like a failed root canal.  Many times it's very difficult to get all the nerve out of the root.  An endodontist may be able to do another root canal to save the tooth.
It's really not an error on your dentist's part.  Sometimes the roots make right angles that are impossible to see and clean.  Only recourse is a second procedure or extraction of the tooth.

So if my dentist did not do a good job, I have to pay for an endodontist to fix his mistake?  I see my dentist next week, why can't he fix it for free, if it is his error?

Unsuccessful root canal treatment generally results from imcomplete canal debridement and obturation, occasionally, it may result from untreatable accessory canals.Seeing an endodontist is advised.
