Wisdom Tooth, What Do I Do

I am 43, have impacted wisdom at bottom left, been warned about the numbness thing between lip and law already by oral surgeon. Tooth caught between nerve etc under gum. Its causing pain, but the hospital want me to try other options first in case its not the tooth he said, he told me to return to dentist in case its a leaky filling that could be causing the pain. Then to get it re filled first. I had Xray taken of wisdom, but its 8wk for the 3D Xray, I am in UK on nhs side.

The dentist that originally referred me to hospital is a new dentist I have joined, this dentist did not orig put in my old filling, its been in there a few years now. Surgeon is also making me a grinding thing to wear at night in case its that and not the wisdom tooth, I know they taking all precautions but I feel they don't know what it is. Its like guessing games really.

The pain comes from the wisdom area, either sharp going to ear or dull ache. My tooth is in upright position slight bent towards back, the top part but not a lot. Its right next to my molar with a very slight gap between.

My wish would be just to get the thing out and done with. But now hear these stories about the numbness etc, when I had others out years ago was fine. But I was younger then.

If it remains there wont it cause my other teeth to shift? or problems with them? Plus the pain will just get worse over time I would have thought?

Thanks for answer, just getting used to this site. I dont know what country you are based in, but unfortunately in the UK you cant pick and choose oral surgeons on the NHS, who you get is what you get! if that makes sense, if you are not happy they will just tell you to go private, which I cant afford to do. When you are referred to hospital here for any surgeon by your doctor or dentist, you are assigned to someone who they choose.

They told me to post to ask actual docs or dentist my question, I hope it went in the right part this time. LOL.

Well my gum is swollen slightly at the back. I am 43 now. Like you say, if the wisdom shifts then will my teeth right. Thanks for the note on that to.

I joined a new dentist recently and he did his part, he referred me straight to hospital to have the tooth out. And now the surgeon is dithering.

Hello!

I am so sorry about the problems you are having with your wisdom tooth. I remember that experience all too well! My wisdom teeth (all 4) were impacted. They would try to break through my gums, leaving me with swollen, aching gums. I would chew gum all the time just to give myself something to do - plus, for some reason, it would take the 'edge' off the pain. I went through that for several months until I had them all out at once. I was 17 and quite relieved.
As long as that tooth stays where it is, there is the chance that it will apply pressure to the teeth nearby and cause shifting. As for the pain - my wisdom teeth would drive me mad for periods and then stop bothering me for a few months, then it would start all over again.
Personally, I would find another oral surgeon and get an additional opinion. It can't hurt! Take care and good luck!!
