Wisdom teeth removal and facial esthetics

Hi,

I'm wondering if any of the doctors could provide some insight on a concern I have over wisdom teeth removal. I'll try not to bore you with all the details but I got my wisdom teeth removed 5 years ago, at the age of 19, and since then think I've noticed slight facial changes. These are evident outwardly, and in my pre and post removal pano's. The changes include a slightly narrower face/jaw, flatter cheeks, and a more oval as opposed to square shaped face. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on these changes, and also, if you think dental implants might help remedy them? I know implants aren't usually done on these teeth but I have spoken with a specialist who I think is willing to do them, and I just want to get a few more second opinions before I do anything. I would definitely get zirconia implants to achieve the most biocompatible, healthy result, but I'd still like to learn more about the esthetic results of this procedure. I have read that 2nd molar implants are commonly done with positive, outward results; do you imagine the same would be true with the 3rds? Thanks so much in advance for your time and expertise.

Cheek muscles generally are strong and not supported by teeth. Unlike lips, which are supported by anterior teeth. Bulky cheeks are generally manifestations of bruxism or clenching. Replacement of missing second or third molars are not considered effective  to support cheek. Instead, if you really intend to strengthen cheek muscles, more chewing activities are probably more efficacious.

Hi,

Thanks so much for your informative comment-and I apologize for the late reply! I'm relieved to hear about the cheek muscles, but in your opinion does the lower jaw recede and/or get narrower as a result of the extractions (as there is no longer a tooth to necessitate the thicker jawbone in that region)? Thanks again!
