electric toothbrush too harsh on gum + enamel???

I have had the problem of brushing my teeth too hard.  Trust me, I have tried to be gentle, but can never change.

Since I already have this brush too hard that causes my gum to shrink and enamel almost gone, I wonder if using the electric toothbrush would be even worse, even though it cleans actually better?

**** My hygienist highly recommend to use an electric one, for I am on the "watch-list" for gum disease
