is the dentist really nessary?

Hey everyone I have a long family history on moms side and dads side with severe dental issues. I understand if you have a toothache then go get it taken care of... But I've got about 80% of my teeth full of cavities, some holes are big. But I don't have tooth pain, no headaches, nothing. My teeth no way bother me. I feel like its worth to save my money now because no matter what, every person on both sides of my family got dentures before the age of 40. My teeth are perfectly straight, wisdom teeth got taken out years ago, nothing to worrie about right? Anyone agree with me on this? Or should I re-evaluate my thinking process?

Try los Angeles county hospitals free for low income ppl and only 60 bucks for any procedure done if you don't qualify..only thing is only cleanings, fillings and simple extractions are done there but its a helpful place to start...

Google or look in your local phone book for dental schools. If you have no income or insurance they will usually do the work for free. I know several people who have went to dental schools and are very happy with the care.

Thanks for the info. Never assumed it would cause other health problems. I do have a huge issue though, I'm unemployed and got denied for dentacal. Does anyone know of free clinics in southern California?

Lots of people with social anxiety and fear of dentists have problems. The good news is that dentists are doctors and that they're there for you! Taking care of your teeth is important for your self esteem and health.

Just tell your doctor how terrified you are and they'll take care of you. Professionals are very understanding of people with phobias.

Boy, do I ever agree with remar!  All those cavities you mention may silently be dissolving the bone holding in your teeth.  If you haven't had any problems - why be a ticking bomb waiting to go off!   You can't go by what happened with your parents.  Dentistry has changed and so has preventive care.  Had your parents KNOWN to care for their teeth differently may have changed their outcome.

Sorry, but using your parents as an excuse for what amounts to poor oral care is not going to help YOUR dental situation with many cavities.  You are you.  You are responsible for YOUR dental care.  PLEASE make an appt and start to care for your teeth properly.  Your thinking is far too old fashioned to hold much credence anymore.

Listen to remar and start to brush properly, too.  It's time to get out of the Dental Dark Ages.

My best to you,
Gellia

I'm sorry but, I disagree with you. Get your teeth taken care of now. Having cavities and gum problems can cause all sorts of health problems. If you take care of your teeth now you should be able to keep them the rest of your life. After you get them fixed, if you decide to do so, go in twice a year for a checkup and cleaning. Brush morning and night and floss very well once a day. They may not be hurting you now but they could start to at any time.
