First it will not cause cancer in this area. That is not to say that the smoking will cause cancer or other problems. The purple color is more likely some bleeding that place in the area. That being said it does sound like a long time to be in that much pain. i would return to the doctor and have it checked out.

good chances you have dry socket. when you smoke (im sure they warned you about this) or drink through a straw you risk losing the clot. the clot is what starts the healing process. if this is indeed dry socket you need to return to your dentist where they will pack medication into the socket. it will make it feel so much better. i am not a dds just giving my opinion from working in a dental office.

I had a tooth extracted 3 weeks ago; this was an old wisdom tooth that grew in, in the place of a regular tooth that was previously pulled many years ago.  This was on the bottom left.  The sight itself does not hurt, but my jaw hurts ONLY when I open my mouth. There is some swelling on the cheek.  What is the problem?  There is NO PAIN except when I open my mouth....the jaw hurts, or the muscle in the jaw.  Is this from the shots the dentist gave me before he extracted the tooth?
