i had a root canal 3 weeks ago and it still hurts where you think the tip of the root would be. Ive had 3 oher root canals, and they were tender for a few days but nothing serious! this last root canal 3 weeks is another story all together. a week after i had it done...well 5 days i woke up in the wost pain ever! went back to the dds and had an infection. he said most likey i had an old chronic infection which never hurt me but the root canal proceedure casued the infection to "flare" up and go accute. i went on steriod pack called methylprednisolone and pencillin for a week. but i ran out last fri. i still have pain in the rooth basically abouve the tooth in the root. it hurt to touch the outside of my face. my dds said pain lasting sometimes weeks is normal cus he said if it hurt before the root canal its gonna hurt afterwards. Im not satisfied with this. i never had issues with my 3 other root canals, they were pain free from the minute i left the dds or pain free w/in 2 days. but this one is making me paraniod. so i called an endo (my general dds sis the root canal), i called the endo cus they only do root canals and i have a evalutaion on weds to have it looked at. i just know my own body and i know when something isnt right. the root canal maybe perfect like my dds is saying but i know that its not right, i sispect there is an abcess up there or infection still present. i havent felt good in 3 weeks since its been done aka tired, fever here and there...ill feel mush better after i see the endo for the 2nd opinion, if he tells me its good, then okay but i just know its not! i feel it.
If you had the root canal done by a general dentist, you can go to an endodontist (root canal expert) for a second opinion.
I am having the same problem. Pain in my jaw six days after RCT waking me at night. Please post back your progress. I feel that there is a problem with this tooth still.

If the infection from the tooth invaded the bone before you got the root canal done, chances are your pain/swelling is coming from the infection outside the tooth. Root canals dont tend to cause swellings.
I would check back with your dentist. He may want to put you on antibiotics if the infection isn't going away on its own.
