permanent onlay FELL OUT

I've had this permanent onlay for 3 years in a molar, and it just popped out when I was flossing. I have good dental health, but had orthodontics on and off in the mean time [there was a metal ring around that molar]. Could this have weakened the onlay?

How should I approach my dentist? I am mad that their work didn't last, and wonder if their repair will. I'm also wondering if they give a price break on the repair vs. going to a new dentist for the repair.

How long can I leave my tooth in this state without risk to it, as it's exposed, but not causing me severe pain; just sensitive to heat/cold.

i would be relieved that all it took was a little glue and happily paid whatever it cost considering if anything else was wrong it would have been far more expensive. as with most dental restorations there is never a guaranty how long the work will last and 3 years is too long to expect a discount.

It turns out that after that weekend, my jaw was really sore - perhaps from the unbalanced bite, so I went to the dentist pronto. She charged to re-glue the onlay!

Actually after checking my records, I had this onlay after orthodontics, so it popping out had nothing to do with the stress of braces.
