post root canal pain

I underwent my first root canal 2 days ago..(molar) with I believe 3 roots. I've been on penicellin for 5 days due to pain and swelling in my neck just under the affected jaw line. From what I've read...the pain and neck swelling should be significantly subsiding by now..I'm on Vicodin ES every 4 hours but make it barely past 3 hours before extreme pain sets in. I've not used that tooth and have rested..along with taking ibuprofen for swelling etc...we are going into a holiday weekend and I am concerned abt 2 things...1. The extreme pain that is only reduced if I consume more pain medication that is prescribed and 2. Why does my neck still hurt and is swollen after 5 days of antibiotic tx?  I believe the pain is worse now than  prior to the procedure with the exeption of relief with opiates. Am I being overly concerned or is this normal?  I have a history of rapid healing so???

I would be concerned that the swelling is still present. It is possible that a different antibiotic is necessary. I think you need to see the dentist asap.

Just a helpful hint to deal with the pain until you get to the dentist with the holiday weekend and all.  I've been through alot of dental infections, pain, medications etc. with my teeth for the past couple of years.  If you have some sort of ice pack, hold it on the affected area as long as you can stand the cold.  Also, rinsing with Listerine (no other's will do) acts as a topical analgesic and won't burn your mouth like Anbesol etc.  I've used it several times a day and it makes the pain subside for an hour or two.  Hope this helps and 'I know what you are going through' and hope you get some relief very soon.

you should not be getting worse, and swelling in the neck can be dangerous. You need to brig your situation to the attention of the dentist who teated you, and you should see an endodontist if you have not already
