swelling and pain after root canal

on Saterday i experianced real bad tooth ache in a broken top right tooth, (middle back) the tooth istself was almost broken down to the gum, so i went to a emergancy dentist at the local hospital. he said that it cant be extracted because of a infection, so he will clean it up. he then did 1st stage root canal (thats what the letter says) and told me he removed the nerve, he then put something in which tasted like peppermint and tempory filled it, after the injection wore down i experiance more pain than i did before going. so i went back and they gave me some IBUPROFEN to take.
I was already given some AMOXICILLIN 500MG to take and started to take imidatly, however it is now tuesday and my face has been swollen and the gums near the tooth is all puffy and sore like i have thousands of mouth ulsers. i am getting worried as it really hurts.
I have stopped taking the IBUPROFEN as i read this could cause face swelling.

Please help, is this a rare thing that can happen after root canal?

kind regards
Clive

My wife is experiencing the same thing right now she had her root canal 3 days ago. Did you ever find out what was wrong or did it just go away after a few days?

Your condition is known as flare up, which may be associated with endodontic instrumentation, administration of appropriate antibiotics can generally clear up swelling in 48-72 hours. If the offending tooth is non-restorable, extraction is the treatment of choice.
