why am I having pain after tooth nerve removal

hello, had the first part of a root canal on upper molar where the nerve was removed. last night I got some intense waves of pain that felt like nerve pain. this morning just feels achy with slight throbbing but also had one episode of milder version of same thin that happened last night. Is this normal? don't understand why that kind of pain would happen with nerve gone. was actually worse than the pain I had before.
