Thank you for the answer. I'm actually looking for a M.D., from what I gathered on the psychology.com site, thay provide referrals for therapists.

My official diagnosis a few years ago was Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). After doing some research about (GAD), back then, I came to realize that I've been suffering from (GAD) for some years prior to the " official diagnosis ". I simply didn't know there was an actual condition (GAD), or that my problem actually had a medical label/term. Nor did I know that many Americans suffer from GAD.  So it was somewhat of a relief to know that my condition was not "unique" and that there were other folks out there going through what I was going through. I was fortunate to have some friends who pointed me in the right direction regarding getting professional help from a M.D.

He was a great doctor and at first prescribed me an antidepressant Paroxetine (Paxil) 20mg a day, but after 3 months we found it really didn't provide me with any relief. He then prescribed Alprazolam (xanax) .5mg  3 x's a day for one month and then changed it to (2) .5mg  x's a day and (1) 1mg at bed time for as long as I needed it. After close to a year we gradually lowered the dosage until I stopped taking it all together. For the next few years whenever the condition manifested, and ( significantly interfered ) with my activities he would prescribe Alprazolam  as needed.

I relocated to Chicago a couple years ago and have had no reason to use Alprazolam, up until recently. I'm not completely sure why, but doctors are very reluctant to prescribe Alprazolam here. I'm pretty sure it's because drugs like Alprazolam are being used / abused recreationally just like Qualudes (Methaqualone) was abused in the 1960's and 1970's. But why should that have any affect on people like myself who have no interest in using drugs recreationally.

My friends and associates keep telling me to simply purchase Alprazolam through the Internet and save myself the aggregation of finding an understanding M.D., but I'm not sure if that's the  right thing to do. For one, I think it's illegal, and two, how do you know what you getting from the internet.

Anyway, that's why I was looking for advice on finding a compassionate yet professional doctor in Chicago.

Thanks,

Andrew

I can't refer you to one directly, but if you go to psychologytoday.com, there is a good directory with enough information for you to make an informed decision for yourself.
