hypothyrooid - depression/anxiety

My mother is being treated for hypothyroidism(?)  She is taking thyroxin for this.  She lately has been suffering from severe anxiety attacks, brought on by unknown reasons, and an inability to sleep restfully as she wakes up in a terrible fright and feels the grip of doom upon waking.  She cannot remember dreaming anything but these are becomming more stressful for her as she tends to try not to sleep now.  She constantly has feelings of sadness that show themselves by her suddenly breaking down and crying for no reason.

She apparently is also going through her "change of life" although her doctor does not say much either way about this.  Is there any advice that I can give her besides the gratuital "see your doctor"  Are these normal for her to go through, is she on the wrong medications, should she be on more medication.  She does not like medication in the first place and it is all we can do for her to take an aspirin, but I am worried because she has always been so strong.  Please give some advice.

Lachance,

You relate that your mother, who has hypothyroidism, and is possibly perimenopausal is experiencing insomnia, anxiety, sadness and is tearful.  Its clear that your mother is anxious and depressed.  Depression and anxiety may be related to thyroid dysfunction or its possible that these symptoms represent a new onset of panic disorder or major depression. I suggest that your mother have her thyroid horomone level checked to help clarify the situation.
Keep in mind that this information is intended for educational purposes only.  Please consult your personal physician for specific health concerns. A psychiatric evaluation may also be helpful.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM

I'm on thyroid medication also.  If the dosage is too high the results are anxiousness and poor sleep.  Have your mom checked out and monitored by an endocrinologist.
