I have been on Prilosec and now Nexium for years. Last April (2001), I had a severe bout of distress related to the gallbladder and came very close to having it removed. I elected not to, and went online to find relief for the severe gas pains that come with the attacks. You know, belching for hours, gas pains that keep you up for hours at night, etc.
I discovered activated charcoal. It is great! It can absorb gas and toxins in the digestive tract. I haven't used antacid one in over a year. Take 2 to four capsules when eating a "bad" meal or when you have distress occuring. It works for me.
Today, I'm trying to get off nexium. I stopped taking it two days ago. I have a headache, my stomach hurts, and I have additional acid. But the charcoal seems to be keeping the negative symptoms down. I'm going to try this approach for a few more days and see if I can live without it.
By the way, activated charcoal does a number of amazing things to cleaning the body out. It also absorbs drugs, so you should be wary of using it when you are forced to take prescription medications.

I have been taking Buspar and Zoloft and my phychiatrist tells me to switch to Celexa and Welbutrin. Well let me just say that after reading your posts I am NOT crazy. I have only taken 20 mg. of Celexa and 150 mg. of Welbutrin for only 3 days and my stomach is sooooooooooo bloated and I have really bad pains in my stomach . I though what the heck. Anyway, this was worse that ocd and anxiety combined, not to mention that the Welbutrin made me just want to pop out of my own skin. I was up all night long with insomnia so bad , my legs were tingling.
FORGET THAT...Back to my wonderful Buspar and Zoloft. I take one 15 mg. of Buspar in the morning, 50 mg. of zoloft at lunch, and one 15 mg. of Buspar at night. That seemed to do the trick.
What I want to know is how long before the stomach from hell thing goes away. I feel like I have this "HUGE" stomach and it keeps on gurgling.
Hi:
I can relate to your gastro symptoms. I have also been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and I have had a colonoscopy and a upper GI about 8 months ago because of chronic bowel problems. However, I have developed a "gas" probelm as well that sounds identical to yours. I have the burning sensation that wakes me early and I get severe gas all day. When this occurs I have extreme nausea, which sometimes casues me to vomit -- I can't function the whole day. I haven't found relief from the gas meds available over the counter. Please post if you get any answers to your problems.
Thanks!
Celexa gave me severe stomache pains as well. I didn't like it at all...you can read my response about celexa in the topic above this one on celexa withdrawal. It's really hard when your system gets screwed up and the doctor starts switching meds, your body has no idea what's happening and, well, I've just had bad experienced trying to get the right combination of meds for my problems (severe depression, interstitial cystitis, arthritis, angina/tachycardia). I hope you start to feel better soon, you sound really frustrated.
Regarding the diagnosis, e.g parasites, etc?, I can't give an opinion, and finding another g.i. doctor is definetly the right course for you at this time.
ssri's cause g.i. symptoms because they effect serotonin, and most of the body's serotonin is in the bowel...so I think that explains the Celexa, and your reasons for avoiding ssri's.
You might ask your doctors for a short, simple trial of klonopin, which is an anti-anxiety drug, and could help you with some of the anxiety about your condition, and quiet things down for a while, and let your stomach heal.
