It is normal for everybody to grieve. Everybody deals with loss differently.
I guess my concern is that grief could affect the person to a degree where their judgment is impaired and they discontinue meds, etc. I'm not sure if that is a valid concern.
Stress can make people more vulnerable so I would look at potential ways to reduce any additional stress.
As someone with mental health issues I don't like to be seen as different. Be sensitive and compassionate but don't alienate the person. They are a person with feelings first and foremost. Bipolar, I feel, is secondary.
The doctor may be aware of implications. As long as the condition is managed they, or you -if we're talking about yourself, should be OK.
