Virus or high blood pressure?

I have had symptoms of vertigo for over a month. It first started with severe clogging and burning in the ears followed by severe congestion in the head. This lead to sleeplessness for about three days. I then noticed that I was experiencing vertigo that was later confirmed by my doctor. The vertigo sometimes is so bad that I experience hot and cold spells and rapid beating of the heart. I have had a couple spell of numbness of the arms and almost fainting from the spells. I was told to go to a ear, nose and throat doctor to see if I had an inner ear infection. He confirmed that I did not have any inner ear problems and suggested that I be tested for high blood pressure. My family doctor took a blood test, ekg , and blood pressure. Everything was fine. He has suggested all along that this might be a virus, however he cannot confirm. He now has me on a powerful antibiotic and decongestant. This has not been helping. The sleeplessness has returned. My question is that does this seem more like a virus or should I be taking action to get different test done for blood pressure? How do you explain severe burning sensation in my ears but yet I have no infection? It seems as though sleeping through the night helps considerably with the vertigo. How long does this vertigo feeling last? When can I expect a little relief? How do I get relief? How do I know that this is not more than just a virus?

Dear Kerry,

This question is best answered by a specialist. It is best to return to your
physician so as to discuss the differential diagnosis.
If you have questions related to mental health, we would be happy to address them. It is possible that this is an atypical presentation of a panic atack, but I would rule out other medical causes first.

Best Wishes,
